Institute of Technology, we have to start conserving coal, oil and gas before it is too late; and nuclear power is
the only alternative. (4)______, many people do not approve (5)______ using nuclear power because it’s very

News Media are the means or methods by which people learn what is happening in the city, in the
country and in the world. The news media can be classified into two general categories: the categories of print
media and electronic media. Print media use the written material to communicate news to readers. Electronic
media use air waves to send news into homes, offices and public places. Print Media are usually divided into
magazines and newspapers. Most newspapers print news daily. For example, the newspaper "The New York
Times" is published every day of the year. Most news magazines are published weekly, for instance, Newsweek
and Time magazines are published once a week. The electronic media are generally divided into radio and
television, Radio news is news that you listen to. In the United States many radio stations broadcast five minutes
of news every hour. T.V news is that you not only listen to but also watch. In Canada and the United States, for
example, many people watch an hour of news on TV at 6 o'clock in the evening. In the future, new categories of
news media will develop. Even today, computers are beginning to influence the transmission and reception of
news.

The World Wide Web was developed by British physicist and computer scientist Timothy Berners-Lee
as a project within the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. Berners-
Lee combined several existing ideas into a single system to make it easier for physicists to use data on the
Internet. Most important, he added multimedia - the ability to include graphics - to the hyperlink concept found
in a previous Internet service known as gopher. Berners-Lee had begun working with hypertext in the early
1980s. An early prototype implementation of the Web became operational at CERN in 1989, and the idea
quickly spread to universities in the rest of the world.
Groups at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-
Champaign researched and extended Web technology. They developed the first browser that was used at many
sites, named Mosaic, in 1993. To allow the Web to be accessed from a wide variety of computer systems,
researchers built multiple versions of Mosaic. Each version was designed to be used with a specific operating
system, the software that controls the computer. Within a year, computer programmer Marc Andreessen had
formed a commercial company, Netscape Communications Corporation, to build and sell Web technologies.
New vocabulary:
gopher (n.): chuột túi, sóc túi
prototype (n.): người (vật) đầu tiên, nguyên mẫu
implementation (n.): sự thi hành, sự thực hiện đầy đủ, sự bổ sung

Exercise 8:
In the late 20th century, mass media could be classified into eight mass media industries: books, the
Internet, magazines, movies, newspapers, radio, recordings, and television. The explosion of digital
communication technology in the late 20th and early 21st centuries gave rise to the question: what forms of
media should be classified as "mass media"? For example, it is controversial whether to include cell phones and
video games in the definition.
Each mass medium has its own content types, creative artists, technicians, and business models. For example,
the Internet includes blogs, podcasts, web sites, and various other technologies built atop the general distribution
network. Internet and mobile phones are often referred to collectively as digital media, and radio and TV as
broadcast media. Some argue that video games have developed into a distinct mass form of media, in the sense
that they provide a common experience to millions of people across the globe and convey the same messages
and ideologies to all their users.
1.Which is NOT regarded as mass media industry in the late 20th century?
A. movies B. newspapers C. recordings D. cell phones
2. All the following are true EXCEPT________________
A. In the 21st century, it is not widely accepted that there are now more than eight mass media industries.
B. Digital media can be subdivided into various content types.
C. Video games are the newest mass media platform.
D. Radio and TV are considered broadcast media.
3. The word “controversial” in the first paragraph refers to_______
A. easily accepted B. causing disagreement C. widely used D. increasingly important
4. The word “some” in the second paragraph refers to_____
A. people B. types C. technologies D. blogs
5. It can be inferred from the text that_______________
A. Video games are formally added into the definition of mass media.
B. Internet and mobile phone are much more developed than Radio and TV.
C. Digital communication technology developed widely in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
D. We can not count the types of Mass media because they are too many.
Exercise 9:
Although noise, commonly defined as unwanted sound, is a widely recognized form of pollution,
it is very difficult to measure because the discomfort experienced by different individuals is highly subjective
and therefore, variable. Exposure to lower levels of noise may be slightly irritating, whereas exposure to higher
levels may actually cause hearing loss. Particularly in congested urban areas, the noise produced as a by-
product of our advancing technology causes physical and psychological harm, and detracts from the quality of
life for those who are exposed to it.
Unlike the eyes, which can be covered by the eyelids against strong light, the ear has no lid, and is
therefore, always open and vulnerable; noise penetrates without protection
Noise causes effects that the hearer cannot control and to which the body never becomes accustomed.
Loud noises instinctively signal danger to any organism with a hearing mechanism, including human beings. In
response, heartbeat and respiration accelerate, blood vessels constrict, the skin pales, and muscles tense. In fact,
there is a general increase in functioning brought about by the flow of adrenaline released in response to fear,
and some of these responses persist even longer than the noise, occasionally as long as thirty minutes after the
sound has ceased.
1. According to the passage, what is noise?
A. A byproduct of technology B. Physical and psychological harm
C. Congestion D. Unwanted sound
2. Why is noise difficult to measure?
A. All people do not respond to it in the same way.
B. It causes hearing loss.
C. It is unwanted.
D. People become accustomed to it.
3. The word congested in paragraph 1 could best be replaced by ____.
A. hazardous B. crowded C. polluted D. rushed
4. The word it in the end of the first paragraph refers to ____.
A. The quality of life B. our advancing technology
C. the noise D. physical and psychological harm
5. It can be inferred from this passage that the eye ____.
A. responds to fears B. enjoys greater protection than the ear
C. increases function D. is damaged by noise

Exercise 10.
If you want to make your school green, think beyond your classrooms. Here are some suggestions that are all
easy and simple to follow, and can make a big difference in reducing your carbon footprint and creating a
sustainable community.

One of the places where both teachers and students often spend some of their time in the library. An eco-
friendly reading space is likely to create a favourable impression on library users, and bring some significant
educational benefits. For example, you can install energy-saving products like fans instead of air-conditioners
which consume a lot of energy. You can also use biodegradable dust cloths or old T-shirts to clean the
environment. In addition, to raise public awareness, allocate a clearly visible space on the noticeboard for
everyday green tips like ‘Let others reuse your book’.
Sporty students may prefer to spend more time in the swimming pool than in the library. Therefore, keeping this
place safe and green will also help to raise their environmental awareness. Remember that chlorinated pool
water may cause red eyes and itchy skin to some people if they spend much time in the pool. An ideal
alternative would be a salt-water pool, which can be naturally clean and economical. In case warm water is
required, think of solar heating save the environment as one pool with gas or electric heater may emit tons of
carbon dioxide each year.

Finally, focus on the school gym, which is perhaps the most interactive and exciting place for all school staff.
Think of installing low-flow taps and showers to save gallons of water per minute and energy-saving lights to
cut the cost of electricity. Moreover, make sure that the airflow pathways are clear and free of mould, mildew
and other allergens.

1. What do you think is the best title for the text?

A. How to make your community green.

B. Ways to raise students' awareness of being environmentally friendly.

C. How to make your school more sustainable
