CITIZENSHIP AND ITS TYPES

A relationship between an individual and state to which the individual owes allegiance and in
turn is entitled to its protection. Citizenship is the most privileged form of nationality.

Types of citizenship: Some types of citizenships are mentioned below

1. Family Citizenship (jus sanguinis): If one or both of a person’s parents are citizens of
a given state, then the person may have the rights to be a citizen of that state as well.
Following are the examples of family citizenship offered by countries of the world.

• Canada
• New Zealand
• Thailand
• Austria
• Portugal

2. Citizenship by Birth (jus soli): The practice of automatically granting citizenship to a


born child in a particular country regardless of the citizenship status of parents. . Following
are the examples of citizenship by birth offered by countries of the world.

• Egypt
• Morocco
• Sudan
• Malaysia
• Thailand

3. Citizenship by Marriage (jus matrimonii): The becoming of a naturalized citizen by


marrying an individual with a citizenship. . Following are the examples of citizenship by
marriage offered by countries of the world.

• Switzerland
• Colombia
• Sweden
• Norway
• Denmark

4. Economic Citizenship: It is an investment migration mechanism many countries use


where in expats, investors; entrepreneurs are offered full citizenship in return for their
economic contribution. Following are the examples of economic citizenship offered by
countries of the world.

• Dominica
• Grenada
• Montenegro
• Turkey
• Malta

5. Citizenship by Naturalization: It is a legal act by which non-citizen may acquire


citizenship of another country. Under the constitution and laws there are certain rights and
privileges that could be enjoy only by certain citizens. Demography and economic forces
promote immigration, which is resisted for a combination of security fears and ethnocentric
attitudes. Only qualified citizens can exercise the right of suffrage. Following are the
examples of citizenship by naturalization offered by countries of the world.

• Russia
• Brazil
• Belgium
• Bulgaria
• Netherland
