Civility
Individual differentiation
made us more aware of
our humanity.

That all people,

regardless of race,
nationality geography,
income are humans.

All humans deserve to live

humane lives: a home,
safety, meals, education,
etc.
Creating a Global Civil Society
Recognition of membership in humanity is the subjective dimension of globalization.
Globalization made us aware of what is happening in to fellow humans in other parts of the
world

Creating a Global Civil Society
▪ This awareness makes us feel responsible for
each others' situation;
▪ that we need to share in each others
sufferings
▪ without regard to their class, race,
ethnicity, or religion, but simply because
they are people
Why did the story of the soccer team trapped in the cave in
Thailand capture the interest of the world?

What were nationalities of the people that helped?

Creating a Global Civil Society
Media play important role in helping people visualize
the plight of others and identify with them.
•Television

• Internet

•what else?

As we watch one another online in real time, we

become engaged in one another’s struggles
anywhere in the world.

Creating a Global Civil Society
This makes us want to do something...
Civil Society
Civil society is the network of voluntary
ties that differentiate a community from
the state, the family, and the economy.

An association of people bounded NOT by

interests in the state, kinship, and the
economy; in the unique position to lay
claim to moral authority from which to
judge those institutions.

CSO vs NGO
• nongovernment organizations, or civil society
organizations
• civil society: the newer, trendier and inclusive
term for private organizations engaged in
development work
CSO vs NGO
“[CSOs] can be defined to include all non-market and
nonstate organizations outside of the family in which
people organize themselves to pursue shared interests in
the public domain.
Examples include community-based organizations and
village associations, environmental groups, women’s
rights groups, farmers’ associations, faith-based
organizations, labour unions, co-operatives, professional
associations, chambers of commerce, independent
research institutes and the not-for-profit media

How about a Global Civil Society
Global civil society exists outside of societal bounds, outside of
government and the economy.
• creates the image of the global citizen.
• creates the image of humanity.
Global Civil Society
“a vast, interconnected and multi-layered non-
governmental space that comprises many hundreds
of thousands of self-directing institutions and ways
that generate global effects. “
Global Civil Society
• Active watchdogs, monitoring, investigating, and
publicizing the extent of problems from pollution to
human trafficking,
• Strongest in monitoring; enforcement is the most
difficult issue for civil society groups
• Some civil society groups have imposed sanctions
by withdrawing their services; difficult because it
can increase harm to victims.
International Non - Governmental
Organizations (INGOS)
Criticisms
• not accountable to anyone other than their
members.
• They are elitist
• seen as annoying bodies; putting their noses in
the business of others
• The North ’ s control over INGOs has actually
increased, leading to questions about their
relevance to the concerns of the South.
EXAMPLES
Oxfam
Oxfam is an international confederation of 20
organizations working together with partners and local
communities in more than 90 countries. Oxfam is
determined to change that world by mobilizing the
power of people against poverty.

Members or volunteers in global CSOs are
able to participate in efforts to address
global issues…

This leads us to the concept of global

citizenship…
Global Citizenships
