“[CSOs] can be defined to include all non-market and
nonstate organizations outside of the family in which
people organize themselves to pursue shared interests in
the public domain.
Examples include community-based organizations and
village associations, environmental groups, women’s
rights groups, farmers’ associations, faith-based
organizations, labour unions, co-operatives, professional
associations, chambers of commerce, independent
research institutes and the not-for-profit media

How about a Global Civil Society
Global civil society exists outside of societal bounds, outside of
government and the economy.
• creates the image of the global citizen.
• creates the image of humanity.
Global Civil Society
“a vast, interconnected and multi-layered non-
governmental space that comprises many hundreds
of thousands of self-directing institutions and ways
that generate global effects. “
Global Civil Society
• Active watchdogs, monitoring, investigating, and
publicizing the extent of problems from pollution to
human trafficking,
• Strongest in monitoring; enforcement is the most
difficult issue for civil society groups
• Some civil society groups have imposed sanctions
by withdrawing their services; difficult because it
can increase harm to victims.
International Non - Governmental
Organizations (INGOS)
Criticisms
• not accountable to anyone other than their
members.
• They are elitist
• seen as annoying bodies; putting their noses in
the business of others
• The North ’ s control over INGOs has actually
increased, leading to questions about their
relevance to the concerns of the South.
