Title: The Mughal Empire - Akbar
Target Learner's Profile: Engaged and Reflective

Learning Objectives:
Students will be able to-
Through the chapter, the students will be able to:
● Discuss the importance of the Second Battle of Panipat
● Discuss the administration under the Mughal ruler Akbar.
Session 1 & 2
Set Induction

The teacher Begins the class with the short quiz to revise the previous knowledge of the
students.

She will ask questions like -

Q1) Who was Babur ?

Q2) Which battle did Babur fight and established his throne in India?

Q3) Who became the ruler of Delhi after Babur?

Q4) In the battle of Kannauj, who won and overthrew Humayun?

Q5) Where did Babur flee with his wife after the battle of Kannauj?

Regaining the Throne of Delhi

After this the teacher narrates the story of Humayun regaining the throne of Delhi :
After the death of Sher Shah, his successors were not that strong. There were revolts
in various parts of the Sur Empire. Sher Shah's nephew Sikander Sur declared
himself independent in the Punjab.

This conflicting situation encouraged Humayun to make an attempt to restore the


lost empire after about fifteen years. He got support from Persia and conquered
Kabul and Kandahar defeating his brothers and then he defeated Sikandar Sur in the
Battle of Sirhind and got the throne of Delhi.

After six months, he died in 1556 due to his fall from the staircase of his library.

Second Battle of Panipat :


The Teacher will narrate the story of the Second Battle of Panipat and go through the points
mentioned in the ppt for better understanding.

Biram Khan :

The facilitator will briefly explain about Bairam khan with the help of the pointers mentioned
in the ppt.

Mansabdari System

The teacher explains the concept of mansabdari system with the help of corporate jobs.

The teacher explains that just a candidate is selected on the basis of his/her skills and is paid
for his service here, mansab means ranks and the people were given ranks on the basis of
their skills and were paid for their service.

These posts were not transformed hereditarily and were given to someone else. She further
explains the points mentioned on the ppt.

Session 3

Akbar’s religious policy and Ibadat Khana

Here the teacher will highlight the measures taken by Akbar to unite people and make a
secular kingdom. Points like abolishing Jizya and pilgrim tax, celebrating hindu festivals,
marrying hindu princesses etc will be discussed in the class.

Then the teacher discusses Ibadat Khana which was built in Fatehpur Sikri. It was a place
where religious matters were discussed and representatives of each religion explained their
values.

Akbar’s Religion
The teacher discusses the new religion brought by Akbar i.e Din - i - ilahi which was not a
religion in a strict sense with no rituals or religious books.

Din -i-Ilahi was an amalgamation of all major religions. It ended after the death of Akbar.

Graded Classwork will be conducted in this session

Topic - Akbar formulated the Din-i-ilahi which combined the best practices of all major
religions. He felt that it would be accepted by the diverse people in his empire. Do you
think it is possible to have something like it in present - day India? What would be the
main principles of the religious order? Write a short essay on it.

Rubrics :

Introduction - 1 mark

Main Body - 5 marks

Conclusion - 2 marks

Overall Presentation - 2 marks

Total = 10 marks
