PROLOGUE
“To become what one is, one must not have the faintest idea what one is.”

Studio Skills 2 started off with us getting to know about us,

giving ourselves new definitions that we got to know from
our perspectives as well as from the perspectives of other
people. This is what we define as our identity.

Similarly we compared that to the identity of a brand, how

it usually compromises of two things, Image mark which is
a graphic symbol or icon, and word mark which is textual
representation of the brand name.

A lot of conversations happened around brands and

their contexts, how the same thing in different locations,
between various people in various times can be perceived
so vastly. A brand also has to keep up to cultural and
societal trends to keep up with today’s fast paced industry.
A lot of times advertisements play a major role in reaching
out to specific target audience on particular topics.

Then we came down to Typography which is the language

of the languages. In boring terms it helps to make text
legible, readable and visually appealing. To master that
one has to keep in mind typefaces, font sizes, line lengths,
spacing, etc.

Moving forward we had to take up one random product

and give new identity to it. Me being me searched all the
toys I had and ended up on picking up a Yoyo, lets now
embark on this journey to give our little friend its identity.
BRAND IDEOLOGY

BRAND IDENTITY
“Brand is the story. Design is the storytelling.”

Starting of with the names, there were quite a few that

were there on the table.

OneDrop NovaNex

YoMama YOYOY
Then I began shortlisting the names. There was already
a yoyo company with the name OneDrop and NovaNex
so I tried to avoid those as to avoid confusion in case my
company does become a multi million company :D But yea I
really liked YoMama and YOYOY, so made a few icons to go
with them and tried with the typeface.

I really loved YOYOY as a brand name and wanted to ahead

with it. But YoMama was too funny of a name to let go of so
I had my last fun with it before bidding it farewell.
Now moving forward with YOYOY, explored various
typefaces with the same to see which works and which
doesn’t.

Whilst this was going on I thought of finalizing the tagline

for the brand as well so went ahead with
Spin | Smile | Repeat.
Having the brand name and tagline in mind, started
creating some variations for logo.

I really liked where the last direction was going so started

building up on that, creating custom type along the way.
Started by creating a custom “Y” alphabet as the O was
going to be two circles.

Moving ahead, started creating the main structure for the

logo, how the overall composition is going to look like,
keeping the geometry in mind as well.
With the icon almost ready explored a few types for the
tagline as well.

Finally ended up choosing Eras Bold ITC for the tagline. The
overall package ended up looking something like this.

I really liked the final output as it has a sense of playfulness

as well as looks sporty in a way.
POSTERS
“Designing posters, for me, is not only a commercial pursuit but also a
philosophical endeavor.”

Posters are a vital part of identity of a brand. With branding

of YOYOY I started with thinking about what all I can
associate with spinning, then went on an entire tangent of
thoughts on topics like what is Gandhi is spinning a Yoyo
instead of a Charkha, or instead of the Sudarshan chakra
in Krishna’s hand a Yoyo. Well it was a interesting direction
though it was very unidirectional. In Shreya’s worlds I was
going deep in the beginning rather than going wide.

I then wandered around looking for inspiration from various

sources. How maybe if we connect the most vast topics
can create interest in some posters, whereas in some plain
simplicity does wonders.

A spark ignited in the form of seeing the painting creation

of Adam, well, the god is already stretching their finger out
to mankind, why not let god have his own fun. This led to
another and then to another, I was on a wild ride of ideas
which I thoroughly enjoyed.

I was really lost in the beginning, didn’t get any good ideas.
This went on for over a week maybe, but as the deadline
approached closer the ideas came on their own, is there
some correlation in that. Well these are the things that keep
me up, well all in all this ideation for creating posters was
very different than how it has been, when we were asked
to create a poster for Save tigers or things like that. Realized
that we have came a long way.

While I did create these posters alongside I also wanted
to explore what AI can do in terms of giving me graphics.
Learned that at least for copilot even if you give really
detailed prompts it cant give very good results. All I could
get out of it were few cool illustrations of Yoyos that were
fire themed. Again just to clarify these are AI generated.

“Packaging is the opening dance with the consumer.”

For the packaging started off with making some quick

paper prototypes.

Really like the minimal box with cutout and the special
feature about it is the inner support which is giving the box
less perceived depth can also be converted into a display
stand as shown in the last image.

So now back to business, started off with creating the CAD

file of the net of box to laser cut that.
Moving forward, made some Fire Yoyo inspired graphics
which would later use in the packaging.
A few hours later, took a long time but was really fun too
bringing all the elements of packaging together with
Illustrator. Learned most of the software while doing this.

Just to show details on the back side as well as not to miss

our inner sleeve that will go inside.
Now printed this designs on sticker sheet and got to work :)

Here’s how the final package looks like -

EPILOGUE
“All’s well that ends well. “

This has been an amazing experience from taking a random

object to giving it a whole new identity. I might have a small
love hate relationship with graphic design but am happy
that this came to somewhat of an end here. But also I know
I am gonna keep on revisiting and editing this.

Thanks to our guides Shreya and Ebrahim for

being so patient with us
and for providing your
invaluable inputs
throughout the
course.
