DENTURE BASES

Schneider: Chapter 11

 Cover edentulous ridge in area of

prosthetic teeth
 Replace lost alveolar tissue
 Provide bracing and retention for RPD
 Contours should be identical to those of
complete dentures
Types of Denture Bases

 Metal
 Acrylic on metal
 Acrylic with metal retention
Types of Denture Bases
 Metal
– Uses:
 Tube teeth
 Inadequate space between ridge and opposing
occlusion
 Short horizontal span (Class III)

 Allergy to resin
Metal Bases: examples

In this type of base there is no pink acrylic used.

Metal Bases: cont.
 Contraindications:
– Distal extensions, recent extractions
– When lost gingival/alveolar tissue is an
esthetic issue
 Disadvantages:
– Cannot be relined
– Very difficult to adjust
– Unesthetic
Types of Denture Bases
 Acrylic on metal
– Indications:
 Inadequate space for acrylic with metal
retention type
(Cl 3 o 4)
 Tooth supported RPD (seldom relined)

 Desire for metal base with acrylic flange

– Advantage: more esthetic than all-metal

– Disadvantages: adjustments and relines
Acrylic on Metal: examples

Retention for the pink acrylic can be small beads

(seen here) or “nail head” type.
Types of Denture Bases
 Acrylic with metal retention
 “Acrylic sandwich”
– Indications:
 Distalextensions
 Areas where considerable alveolar tissue has
been lost
 Need for esthetic base

– Contraindication:
 Smallspaces: requires the most room of
base types
Metal Surrounded by Acrylic:
Examples

The acrylic is processed over and under the mesh or

lattice-work which provides good mechanical retention
Types of Bases: cont.
 Acrylic with Metal Retention: cont.
– Advantages:
 Potentialto reline/repair
 Ease of adjustment

 Esthetic

– Disadvantages:
 More lab procedures
 More bulk necessary

 Resin allergy (very rare)
