The use of social media is replacing face-to-face interaction among many people
in society. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?
In nowaday technological era, social media has become more popular than traditional face-to- face conversations. Therefore, the question of whether this situation's advantages outweigh the disadvantages has been a contentious problem. In my point of view, this trend is likely to worsen the development of society the rather than better it. Undeniably, there are several reasons for people, especially the young, to choose social networks as the dominant means of communication, one of which is their convenience. In particular, people are allowed to interact with their significant others via Facebook, Instagram, Twitter regardless of location or time zone, which connect people around the world. For instance, students studying overseas in the USA can keep in touch with their families or friends in Vietnam. Secondly, I suppose social media enables people to share information more easily so that they can be up to date with what is happening throughout the world. This will improve citizens awareness and help them become more well-informed. On the other hand, I believe that the development of social media has more negative impacts on society. First of all, it affects people’s health. To be more speciffic, over-reliance on social sites can make people addicted to them. As a result, they will become too lazy to do physical exercise, which leads to a sedentary lifestyle - the cause of many diseases such as obesity, short-sightedness. In addition, the more popular those networks are, the more prevalent cyberbullying or online harrassment become. Consequently, the victims can have numerous mental problems such as depression, self-harm or can even commit suicide. In conclusion, I am inclined to the idea that although the benefits of social media do exist, its demerits should not be overlooked. It is advisable that people should spend time on meeting face to face in order not to rely on technology too much.
