CHAPTER 1

1.1 Project Context

Schools in the secondary and tertiary like Universities and State Colleges are
known in delivering quality education. In tertiary public schools like Bulacan
State University, have already proven by its graduates’ excellent performance in
the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) board examination
(www.prc.gov.ph/) and employability of those graduates is possible and highly
credible for in and out of the country. With this academic standing of some
tertiary school, arduous efforts are being undertaken to maintain and sustain its
noble function of producing highly qualified and well competitive graduates in the
different academic disciplines like education ,nursing, and engineering. One way
to ensure that students receive the training they need to face the challenges of
the real world is to provide hands-on training on equipment’s and applications
used in the industry
To support the quality education, computer laboratories have long been present
in schools whether it is in secondary or in tertiary. A good example of
beneficiaries is Bulacan State University, College of Engineering with three (3)
computer laboratories that are utilized by the different Engineering Departments.
These laboratories are used by eight different department every semester. For
Computer Engineering department alone, five different year levels use computer
laboratories and with this huge number of users the situation of faculty members
teaching computer programming had always been difficult

Currenltly The IT students of Pangasinan State University San Carlos Campus is
currently required to manually list their names, PC numbers, dates of use, and
signatures. Which is prone to information loss and credibility of the data. The
system aims to address these challenges and resolve some risks, such as
misuse, abuse of usage, and potential loss of computer part and it also to
replace the traditional paper-based logbook into digitalized system that can
more efficiently monitor the records of laboratory room and equipment usage.
1.2 Purpose and Description
The purpose of this system is to develop a LAN-based control system that can
monitor the individual information of a student in access to a PC computer
laboratory. With the help of the proposed system, teachers can maintain the
attendance of the students without using a logbook.
1.3 Objectives of Project

The Developers aim to design and develop Integrated Laboratory

Management System for Pangasinan State University San Carlos Campus

Specifically, it sought to achieve the following objectives:

1. To implement a system-based computer laboratory records

2. To reduce the time spent manually checking the computer part status

3. To secure the information privacy of the students

4. To ensures that users are held accountable for the computer they utilize, thereby

reducing the risk of loss or misuse

1.4 Significance of Project

Using an automated attendance management system integrated into the
laboratory management framework can significantly improve security, efficiency,
and accountability for educational institutions. It is critical to ensure accurate
tracking of student attendance before accessing laboratory computers, as
manual methods can be prone to inaccuracies, especially in academic
environments with hectic schedules and limited resources.
1.5 Scope and Limitations
Scope

 Implementation of a web-based for laboratory technology in Pangasinan

State University San Carlos Campus for IT department. Tracking the use
of the equipment and producing reports on its use in order to keep an eye
out for any possible abuse, loss, or neglect. The system will handle the
procurement or inventory management of laboratory equipment.
Delimitation
• The system is not accessible to other educational institutions beyond
Information Technology Department of Pangasinan State University- San
Carlos Campus . The third-party apps can’t be used for scanning.
1.6 Definition of Terms

Computer Laboratory Management System - A system intended to monitor

and regulate the use of computer laboratories in educational institutions. It has
capabilities like tracking student access, monitoring equipment usage, and
enforcing accountability for resources.

LAN-based Control System - A Local Area Network based system that controls
and monitors access to computer resources in a given region or institution.

Integrated Laboratory Management System - A complete system that

includes numerous laboratory resource management capabilities, such as
equipment tracking, attendance monitoring, and student data privacy protection.

Automated Attendance Management System - A system that automates the

process of documenting student attendance, replacing manual techniques like
as logbooks.
Web-based Technology - Using internet technology to access and operate the
laboratory management system via a web interface, which allows for remote
access and use tracking.

Procurement or Inventory Management - Overseeing the purchase and

inventory tracking of laboratory equipment to ensure effective resource usage
and upkeep.

Third-party Apps - Externally produced applications or software that are not

incorporated into the laboratory management system and so cannot be utilized
for scanning or other system functions.

CHAPTER 2
2.1 Technical Background

2.2 Review of Related Literature/Systems

According to (Talirongan H., Baddilies FJ.,2021) discusses the increasing risks in
computer labs in educational institutions due to information technology and
infrastructure. These risks include both internal threats and external threats to student
work. Emphasize the importance of protecting hardware, network connections, data
security, and operating systems to ensure continuous availability and maintenance of
computer lab materials Furthermore, the section emphasizes the importance of
considering costs when implementing security measures in a computer lab. Although
there are financial constraints, there are also cheaper or less expensive options, such
as implementing security measures and procedures.

The objective of the study is to develop an access control and surveillance system
using barcode technology to enhance the security of computer facilities. This system
will monitor access to labs through a LAN client connected to the local area network,
monitor real-time usage, and maintain usage logs The goal is to develop lab in-charge
knowledge to identify, isolate and fix a common problem before it becomes serious.
In addition, the system aims to deal with issues such as unauthorized use of computing
devices, theft of remote controls, unauthorized changes to enterprise settings, etc.
Moving security so effectively in computer lab applications targeting the study by using
barcode-based navigation management systems , and accountability should improve

In summary, the study seeks to develop a comprehensive access control system for
computer workstations using barcode technology, aimed at increasing the security,
accountability and efficiency of educational institutions
