BIODIVERSITY STUDIES
(21CIV57)
Biodiversity can be defined as the richness of the diversification of all the species living
in a particular area.
Biodiversity is the variation among living organisms from different sources including terrestrial,
marine and desert ecosystems, and the ecological complexes of which they are a part.
Levels of Biodiversity
Genetic biodiversity reflects at the variation of genes within a species
Species Diversity is portrayed as the variability found within the population of a species
or between different species of a community
Ecosystem diversity is defined as ‘the aggregation of various habitats, community types and
abiotic environments of a given area’.
Threats to Biodiversity
➢ Loss of habitat
➢ Poaching and Over hunting
➢ Man-wildlife conflicts
➢ Deforestation
➢ Dams
➢ Urbanisation
➢ Agriculture
➢ Deforestation
➢ Forest fires
➢ Introduction of new species
➢ Natural disasters
➢ Mining
➢ Desertification
