CHAPTER 1

INTRODUCTION

The ability to successfully comprehend and use a variety of financial skills, such as
budgeting, saving, and personal financial management, is referred to as financial
literacy. People who are financially literate learn how to support themselves, which
leads to the achievement of financial stability. Lately, in the Philippines, financial
literacy has gained attention. As the value of planning for the future became apparent
to Filipinos, their concern for managing their financial assets increased. Nonetheless,
the nation only receives a 25% financial literacy score according to BSP Governor
Felipe M. Medalla (2022) placing it in the bottom 30 out of 144 countries studied, In a
global study by Standard & Poor’s (S&P Global Rating)

The present study is concerned with the current poor state of filipinos’ financial literacy.
The spirit of inquiry to come across the impact and importance of financial literacy has
prompted more researcher to conduct this study. It turns out that we tend to carry over
our childhood money management habits into adulthood. This implies that children
who grow up with the proper attitude and mindset regarding money and savings will
generally become more financially savvy as they get older. Their retirement plans and
their choices as consumers clearly reflect this. According to The World Bank study.

However, only small number of studies have so far been conducted for young people
specifically for senior high school students expertising the impact and importance of
handling their financial literacy. There is also need for stretch out cognizance
concerning this matter making a start from the youths. There is an urgent need to pursue
this research because the Philippines’ economic state is demanding for vast growth.
Thus it is one of the way people can succor by being aware of managing financial
resources has a big impact to the said crisis. Through this study, we can find out the
different influence, impact, and significance of financial literacy on the financial
behavior of students and present some ways to cope up potential issues.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

This study aims to determine the impact and importance of financial behavior among
grade 11 ABM Students from San Matias National High School-Senior High School
during the school year 2023-2024. The researchers currently preparing to tackle this
problem effectively. To achieve this target, the researchers needs to expand its
knowledge to prepare for scaling. The result of the study was used as a basis for
presenting a learning content strategy in financial literacy. It aims to address the
following questions:

1. As an ABM student how do you manage your money?

2. What are the advantages and disadvantages of your said financial management
habits?

3. How does your financial literacy state affects your financial behavior? Please
specify.

4. How important it is for you as an student to posses a high financial literacy?

5. In real life situation, how can you apply the value of possessing high financial
literacy?

SCOPE AND DELIMITATION

This study focuses on determining the impact and importance of financial literacy on
financial behavior among grade 11 students of San Matias National High School-Senior
High enrolled in Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) strand. This study
will conduct an interview session with 10 participants of ABM strand from San Matias

National High School-Senior High School and they are selected using random sampling
technique. Through interviews and focus groups, the study intends to gather insight into
how learning about financial literacy could influence ABM students’ financial
decisions and future possibilities. The study used case study. Therefore, this will be
conducted within the month of March-May 2024. This means that related studies may
vary based on the factors and respondents used. The research investigation cannot be
generalized since it only involves a particular set of important informants.

The study is limited to the ABM students of San Matias National High School-Senior
High School. In this study, the researcher will serve as the main instrument of the study
(Pezalla, Pettigrew and Miller-Day, 2012) and will be conducted with the specific time
frame. In order to examine the thoughts and experiences of learners in ABM regarding
financial literacy and behavior, the researcher will use qualitative methods such as focus
groups or interviews. It is composed of 3 questions and will be conducted in English or
Tagalog. Since just one language will be used for the study, non-proficient students’
perspectives might not be presented. The guidelines, resources, and culture of San
Matias National High School might have an effect on the outcome, and researcher bias
may also exist.

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY

This study will serve as a foundation for recognizing how proficiency or deficiency in
financial literacy significantly influences the development of responsible financial
habits among students

SCHOOL ADMINISTRATORS. The results of this study will help them to have
a holistic point of view about the different behavior of a student when it comes to
financial literacy. This study will give them an idea of what program, events and
teaching methods they will use to give their students knowledge about financial literacy.

TEACHERS. Teachers have a crucial role in educating their students about various
aspects of life, including the financial aspects. This study will give them a way to
overcome the negative behavior of their students when it comes to financial literacy.
Additionally, they may find the study is applicable beyond their schools, enabling them
to share knowledge with others.
STUDENTS. As the primary beneficiaries, students will gain valuable insights
about this study. They will recognize the importance of financial literacy and acquire
financial skills such as budgeting, investing, and financial management. By gaining a
strong understanding of financial literacy, students will be empowered to proactively
manage their financial future and pave the way for financial success.

FUTURE RESEARCHERS. The insight they gained from this study will guide
future research about this study. Furthermore, this study will provide a solid reference
and foundation for their future research.

PEERS. Through this study, their families, friends, etc., will become aware of the
importance of financial literacy for students. Therefore, they will support them to learn
more about financial literacy whether in school, at home, or in their environment.
