topic below.
Fascinating fossils
Following the discovery of the dinocephalosaurus, a scientist called Dr. Nick Fraser talked
about why it is significant. He thinks it was good at finding fish because its body was
special. It had a long neck with lots of bones so it could move freely. It could look in small
places underwater for animals to eat. It swam by moving its large limbs. Lots of reptiles
lay eggs, but this animal did not. It had live babies like a mammal. It is very strange! The
fossil was in a very old rock, called limestone, where it had been for millions of years.
People often discover fossils in rocks like this. Earlier in the year, scientists found the
bones of a very dangerous dinosaur called a Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was enormous, so it
was able to hunt many other types of animals. In the mouth of the fossil was another
dinosaur, which it had eaten.
Read the text on page four again and complete the sentences with one word.
7 Focus on vocabulary 2

Transcripts
Newsreader : Scientists found the fossil of an animal that lived a long time ago. It is a type of lizard
called a dinocephalosaurus. It is eleven and a half feet long, with big legs, and lots of
teeth. This animal was good at swimming and ate fish.
Newsreader: It looks strange because it has a very long neck. Its neck is two times longer than
its body. Some people think the fossil looks like a dragon. Scientists from different
countries want to see it because they can learn a lot of things. They found it in the
south of China. It lived there 240 million years ago.
Newsreader: In 2003, people found pieces of the dinocephalosaurus for the first time. Now, they
have found the whole body. In its stomach there were bones of the animals it ate,
which were mainly fish. Scientists know that it spent a lot of time in water.
