5 Reading for gist

You are going to read the text about finding fossils. What is the main idea of the text? Choose one
topic below.

1. Dr. Fraser is passionate about the Tyrannosaurus Rex.

2. The dinocephalosaurus was a typical reptile.

3. Fossils tell us secrets about animals.

Fascinating fossils

Following the discovery of the dinocephalosaurus, a scientist called Dr. Nick Fraser talked
about why it is significant. He thinks it was good at finding fish because its body was
special. It had a long neck with lots of bones so it could move freely. It could look in small
places underwater for animals to eat. It swam by moving its large limbs. Lots of reptiles
lay eggs, but this animal did not. It had live babies like a mammal. It is very strange! The
fossil was in a very old rock, called limestone, where it had been for millions of years.
People often discover fossils in rocks like this. Earlier in the year, scientists found the
bones of a very dangerous dinosaur called a Tyrannosaurus Rex. It was enormous, so it
was able to hunt many other types of animals. In the mouth of the fossil was another
dinosaur, which it had eaten.
