Activity # 1

Mathematical Expressions

Let’s Build Understanding

These are whole numbers: 2, 7, 12, 15, 24, and 42. They are used in counting. These numbers may be
expressed as the sum, difference, product, or quotient of numbers.

Now consider the mathematical expressions below.

5+7 3+9 (addition expressions)

15 – 3 20 – 8 (subtraction expressions)
3x4 2x6 (multiplication expressions)
36 ÷ 3 60 ÷ 5 (division expressions)

These are all mathematical expressions. They all represent the same number. What number is this?

REMEMBER THIS:
A mathematical expression is made up of one or more operations that result in a number. The
mathematical expression may be a sum, difference, product, or quotient or may be a combination of these.

Let’s Check Your Understanding

A. For each given number, write two addition expressions and two subtraction expressions

Activity # 2

Equations and Inequalities

Let’s Build Understanding

When two mathematical expressions represent the same number, we may write them with an equality
sign ( = ) between them. This indicates that the two expressions are equal. The expressions now form an
equation.

Let us look at some equations below:

15 – 3 = 5 + 7 24 ÷ 2 = 3 x 4
12 = 12 12 = 12

In each equation, the expression to the left of the equality sign has the same value as the right-side
expression.

REMEMBER THIS:
An equation is a statement that two mathematical expressions are equal.

When on expression does not give the same number as another expression, we write the inequality sign
( ≠ ) between them. Consider the example below.

14 – 4 ? 6 x 3

What is 14 – 4? What is 6 x 3? Are they the same number? No, since 14 – 4 = 10 while 6 x 3 = 18. The
two expressions are not equal. So we have an inequality sign.

14 – 4 ≠ 6 x 3
10 ≠ 18

REMEMBER THIS:
An inequality is a statement that two mathematical expressions are not equal.

Let’s Check Your Understanding

Write the equality sign ( = ) or inequality sign ( ≠ ) between the mathematical expressions of each pair.

1. 7+8 23 – 8 6. 4 x 5 10 x 2
2. 25 – 7 10 + 8 7. 16 + 2 7x3
3. 20 + 10 5x6 8. 5 – 3 10 ÷ 5
4. 14 x 2 31 – 5 9. 8 ÷ 2 3+1
5. 6 + 14 42 ÷ 2 10. 35 ÷ 5 16 – 9

Let’ Do These

A. Write the correct sign ( = or ≠ ) between the mathematical expressions.

1. 4+8 9+3
2. 60 ÷ 5 80 ÷ 8
3. 6x4 28 – 4
4. 13 – 3 22 ÷ 2
5. 25 – 7 6 + 12

B. Make each equation true by writing the correct symbols of operation ( +, -, x, or ÷) in the boxes.

6. 8 x 2 = 10 6
7. 30 6=9–4
8. 2 4 = 64 8
9. 50 25 = 5 3
10. 100 10 = 25 15
