Note: Attempt all questions

Assume missing data, if any, suitably

Q:1(a) Neglecting all friction, determine tension in the cable ABD and the resultant reaction at
the pin support C, for the system loaded and supported as shown in Fig. 1(a) (10)

Q:1(b) Determine reactions at the fixed support A for the rigid body loaded and supported as
shown in the Fig. 1(b). Given that the vertical upward reaction at support D is 10 kN.

Q:3 Compute the second moment of area of the composite cross-sectional area, as shown in
the Fig. 3, about the y-axis. Also compute the second moment area of the composite area
about its centroidal y-axis (Cy-Gy). (15)

Q:4 Two wedge blocks A & B are stacked as shown in the Fig. 4. A load of 13.5kN is applied
on the block B as shown in the figure. The inclined surface of the blocks has an
inclination of 150 as shown in the figure. The coefficients of static friction between: the
two blocks is pAB = 0.1, block A and horizontal surface is PAC = 0.2 and between the
block B and the vertical wall is pBD = 0.2. Find the minimum force P required to pull the (15)
bottom wedge out. Neglect the weight of both the blocks.

Q:5 The linkage as shown in the Fig. 5 is subjected to a force, P = 6kN at the point B.
Determine the angle 0 for equilibrium if the links AB and CB each have a length of 0.9 m.
The spring is un-stretched at 0 = 60°. Spring constant k = 20kN/m. Neglect the mass of
links. Use the method of Virtual Work. (15)

and supported as shown in Fig. 6. Also locate the points of maximum bending moment
and point of contra-flexure on the diagrams. (20)
