ASSIGNMENT FOR MODULE 1 LESSON 3

FORENSIC3/L

QUESTIONS:
1. What do investigators do when arson is suspected?

Arson investigators heavily photograph areas suspected of arson. Trained arson

investigators use a number of clues to investigate a fire, and are usually the first
on the scene so that they can collect forensic evidence to examine from the site
while it is still fresh.

2. What potential problems do Arson investigators face at a fire

scene?
Arson crimes often leave behind burned or charred evidence and wet
conditions (from attempts to eradicate the flames) and their job is to
detect and identify relevant chemical materials and igniters and
reconstruct the events that led to the fire which can be hard depending
on how it was done

3. What are the common signs of arson?

Some common signs of arson include: Evidence of multiple sites of
ignition; Lines of accelerant residue indicating it was poured from space
to space in the structure; The majority of the burning taking place at the
floor rather than the ceiling. There are several signs. Multiple points of
origin can indicate arson. Fires don’t usually start in more than one
place at a time. Unusual fire behavior is a clue to arson. If the attacking
crew notices unusual behavior, they will report it. Sometimes there are
blatantly obvious signs. We once found a pile of oil-soaked rags with a
punctured gas can in the middle and a lit candle set in the hole on the
gas can. It doesn’t take a skilled investigator to figure out this was arson.
