LIFE: (Beginning to count her losses again) Two hundred thousand, seventy-five, three hundred

and ten. (Looking up.) I must never let him know how much I mind losing soldiers. They are the
flower of youth--there are dreamers among them...

For performance elements, I want to make Life to become a figure of a mother and a saint,
therefore in her posture and gestures she has to be very gentle and soft, as if she was a piece of
fabric. I would like her to sit with her legs crossed while holding a lantern that’s meant to
represent souls, and her gestures will be caringly caressing the lantern as if it was her newborn
child, ideally the audience’s attentions will focus on her movement of the hand, causing them to
feel as if the hand was soothing themselves. Her eyes are fixed on the lantern and her facial
expression would continuously show her pitifulness. When she speaks, I would like her tone to be
slow and assuring like a gentle mother soothing her crying child, but also with a little bit of
sadness since she is counting her losses. Also, I want her to have frequent pauses in this line, I
need her to really take her time when she speaks to fully express the sorrow feelings she has for
the lost lives, and also to build up tension gradually with long pauses while immersing the
audience wholly by giving the audience time to sink into the atmosphere.

For production elements, I want the lights to dim down after death leaves, creating an atmosphere
that suggests privacy as if Life is talking only to herself. Then I would want the music to play
softly and gently until the curtains fall and waits for the final bow, it begins as death leaves the
stage, and gradually fades as the show ends, giving enough time for the music to start and end,
also setting a soothing mood for the audience so that it amplifies the conscience and love that
radiates from Life. Finally, I would want Life to be surrounded by white flowers, as if she is the
brightest and the most beautiful one that rises between them, and the color white it connotates
with purity, and that’s the feeling I want to create for the audience, as if they were purified.
