 Welcome 

Welcome to Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 (NATS 1009).

I am Garry Niedermayer, Unit Coordinator. Human Anatomy and Physiology 1 is the first of
two units covering systematic anatomy and physiology at an introductory level. The unit is
designed to provide students, especially those in applied health science programs, with
an overview of body systems and their functions to ensure a suitable basis for their future
studies. The unit studies the basic concepts of biochemistry and histology, general
anatomy and physiology of the major body systems such as central and peripheral
nervous systems, integumentary system, musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles
and joints), special senses, endocrine and immune system. Emphasis will be placed on
the inter-connection and relationship between structure and function at every level of
organisation.

The following videos are an introduction to the unit. The information in these videos is very
important to your understanding of the unit structure and function.

I wish you all luck and a successful completion of this unit. You can find out more about me
and our teaching team, refer to Teaching Staff section.

Please review the Unit Learning Outcomes below and then proceed to the Getting Started
section.

1. Identify, describe and explain the basic form and function of specific anatomical
structures
2. Identify, describe and explain the physiological processes of majorbody systems
3. Describe and explain the interrelationships within and between anatomical and
physiological systems of the human body
4. Describe and explain how body systems help to maintain a constant internal
environment

 Getting Started 

The material for this unit is structured into a series of learning modules. These are designed
to be completed in sequence throughout the teaching period.

This unit is taught in a blended mode so each module will comprise a series face-to-face and
online components. Students are expected to have completed all components within the
module (such as watching the concept pods, readings and pre-tutorial preparation) before
attending their tutorials. Any resources marked as supplementary are provided to enhance
your learning experience and are not required to achieve the module outcomes.

As you progress through this unit, you will encounter a variety of instructional materials,
resources, technologies and learning activities that have been selected to help you achieve
the learning objectives and demonstrate unit competencies. Each module will provide more
detailed descriptions.
