What is sport tourism?
 Sport tourism refers to the experience of travel to engage in or
view sport-related activities.
 It is generally recognized that there are three types of sport
tourism:
Sport Event Tourism
Active Sport Tourism
Nostalgia Sport Tourism.
What is sport event tourism?
 Sports event tourism includes hallmark events.
e.g. the Olympic games and the World Cup soccer championships.
 Tournaments sponsored by the Ladies Professional Golf
Association, World Tennis Association, and NCAA Men’s
Basketball Tournament are also part of this spectator-based
sector of sport tourism.
What is sport event tourism?

 Tourism associated with professional sport teams and college


football
 Amateur sporting events are often-overlooked.
(e.g. state high school championships, youth-oriented soccer
tournaments, and non-profit community based sport events)
What is active sport tourism?
 Individuals who travel to participate in sporting events comprise
the active sport tourism category.
 This can take on a wide variety of forms in a wide variety of
sports.
e.g. Golf, kayaking, tennis, fishing, snow-mobiling and surfing, etc.
What is active sport tourism?
 “Activity participants”
 Individuals who are amateur participants who travel to take part in
competitions in their chosen sport.
 “Hobbyists”
 Individuals who engage in sport related travel as a form of leisure.
What is nostalgia sport tourism?
 Nostalgia sport tourism involves traveling to famous sport-
related attractions.

e.g. the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York
Sports museums
e.g. NASCAR museum in Charlotte, North Carolina
Famous sport venues
e.g. Beijing national Stadium and the Water Cube
Why has sport tourism become so popular?
 Economic forces

 Attitudinal and Value changes
What are economic forces that drive sport tourism?
 For people to participate in any form of sport tourism, an
adequate amount of money must be possessed.

 Changes in the type of jobs, increased amount of leisure time


 Increased number of holidays
 Improvements in technology

 Time & money!


What are technological innovations that influence
its popularity?
 Transportation
 E.g. automobiles and air travel
 Accommodations away from home
 E.g. hotels, inns, and motels
 The press (media)
 E.g. radio, TV, internet
 Sport equipment production

 Increased access, expanded availability, and ease of participation


What attitudinal and value changes have
occurred?
 Work ethic values  values emphasizing leisure, hedonism, and
self-realization
 Examples
sport clothing has become fashionable in non-sport contexts
rapid growth of commercial fitness clinics

 Achievement and competition  simply want to practice a sport


related activity = lowered the barrier to sports participation
