Тема: Урок домашнього читання. Томас Алва Едісон.
Мета: Ознайомитись із біографією Томаса Едісона, обговорити роль
винаходів Томаса Едісона в сучасному світі, повторити граматичний матеріал,
розвити навички аудіювання, активізувати лексичний матеріал, розвинути
навички усного мовлення та запамятовування лексики, виховати бережливе
ставлення до використання електроенергії, стимулювати активну пізнавальну
діяльність.

Обладнання: Підручник, тематичні малюнки , роздатковий матеріал, зошит,


відео.

- Good afternoon, students. I am glad to see you all. Let's start our busy lesson

- Important inventions were made in different countries. Today we’ll speak
about inventions and inventor. We have learned some facts about useful
inventions which were made in the long history of mankind. Most of them
have really brought us comfort and convenience. We cannot imagine our life
without electric lamps, cars or telephones, television or computers.

3.1 - Answer the questions

 What modern inventions do you have at home?


 Which device can’t you do without?
 What gadget do you use every day?
 What is the most useless thing in your household?

3.2 - Now, I offer you to do the following task. Read the sentences and change
them from Active into Passive.

Group 1.
1. Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone.
2. Clyde William Tombaugh discovered the planet Pluto in 1930
3. Louis Braille invented a system of writing for blind people in the 19th
century
4. James Watt invented the stream engine
5. Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928
6. John Spisbury made jigsaw puzzles in 1760.

2. Tomas Edison invented the lamp bulb
3. Henry Edward Roberts invented the computer Altair 8800 in 1975

5. Columbus discovered America.
6. The Chinese invented the compass.

3.3 - Watch the video about T. Edison and say why this inventor was called
The Wizard of Menlo Park. Guess if the sentences are true or false.
1) The American inventor Thomas Alva Edison was born in 1847 in
Washington.
2) His teachers considered him to be a good pupil.
3) He liked Math and doing experiments.
4) As a young man he worked as a telegraph operator.
5) He became a full time inventor and photograph.
6) He not only invented the first electric light bulb, but also set up the first
power distribution company.
3.4 - Thomas Edison was born in 1847 in Ohio. He was the youngest of seven
children in the family. As a young boy he struggled in school / His family decided
he should be taught at home by his mother. He also learned a lot of reading books
and doing a lot of his own experiments. As a young man he worked as a telegraph
operator. Before telephones were invented , people used telegraphs to send
messages over long distance.

Thomas Edison began inventing. Inventing is coming up with new ideas and tools.
He invented the phonograph which recorded sound and the kinetograph which was
an early movie camera. He became a full time inventor and scientist. His
laboratory had a large staff to help with experiments. In 1879 TE developed the
first light bulb that could be used in homes and last a long time . Thomas Edison
built a power station to bring electricity to people’s home using wires. Now people
didn’t have to use gas lamps and candles for light.

3.5 - And now it's time to work with the book. Match the words with their
definitions (Ex.2, p.206)

3.6 - Okay, next exercise - сhoose the correct words from the text to complete the
sentences (Ex. 3, p.207)

3.7 - T. Edison is one of those inventors who got more patents than the others. At
home you had read the text about this famous inventor, put the sentences in the
correct order (Ex.8, p.208)
4.Висновок

- So, Thomas Edison is a great inventor and a wonderful person. His inventions
bring great benefit to all of us and make life better. Say why Thomas Edison made
so many inventions and achieved great success in science?
