IELTS SPEAKING PART I (INTERVIEW)


I. TIPS
Part 1 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 4 and 5 minutes.
1). Giving full, relevant answers to the examiner's questions will help get the interview off to a good
start. (Đưa ra câu trả lời đầy đủ, phù hợp cho các câu hỏi của giám khảo sẽ giúp cuộc phỏng vấn có

2) Avoid giving short, uncommunicative replies. (Tránh trả lời ngắn gọn, thiếu thông tin.)
Q: Where are you from?
A: I'm from Hoorn in the Netherlands. (Don't stop there!) It's about 35 kilometers north of Amsterdam. It's
a modern city but with a lot of history and a lovely place to live.
3) Avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers to closed questions. (These are questions beginning 'Have you ...',
'Do you ...', 'Is it ...' etc which can be answered simply with a yes or no answer). ( Tránh trả lời

Q: Have you visited any English speaking countries?
A: Yes. (Don't stop there!) I went to England last year and spent two weeks seeing the sights. A couple of

A: No. (Don't stop there!) I'm not really interested in playing sports. I like watching sport on TV and I
really enjoyed keeping up with the Olympics recently.
4) Offer examples to help you explain a statement (Đưa ra các ví dụ để giúp bạn giải thích một

Q: Why are you preparing for the IELTS exam?
A: Because I need it for my studies. (Don't stop there!) I've been offered a place at a university in England
to study on an MBA but I need to show my level of English is good enough.
5) Consider this phase of the test meeting someone for the first time and telling them about yourself.

Sample Interview Questions
FAMILY
o Describe your family?
 I live in a nuclear family, with my parents and a younger brother. My father is an
agricultural engineer while my mother is a small market trader. My brother is currently a
student in high school

 A year ago, I come from a large family. My family consisted of 6 members but
unfortunately, both my grandfather and grandmother passed away. They all died of old age.
And now my family only has 4 members: father, mother, younger brother and me.
o How much time do you spend with your family?
 I spend a lot of time with family members. I go shopping with my mother, and play
volleyball with my father and brother. Because I consider my family very important and I
want to be able to maintain a good relationship with them.
o What do you like to do together as a family?
 My family loves to cook together. And enjoy it while talking about our life. We enjoy music
as well. So when we meet, we sing and dance.

 Sure. We are really close to each other. I am happy that I can tell them anything. They are
always there to listen when I have problems.

 Yes, types of families vary in terms of the size of the household. There are small families
with one or two children and large families with about eight or more children. Sometimes,
parents decide to adopt a child without relatives.

EDUCATION
o Describe your education.
 I started school when I was 6 years old. I finished elementary school five years later and went to
secondary school at age 11. Then, at the age of 16, I entered a public high school near my house.
In my country, general education lasts 3 years, then I go to university. And now I'm a 3rd year
student at Hung Yen University of Technical Education with a major in English.
o What kind of school did you go to as a child?
 I attended a public school for kindergarten through 6th grade. In my time it was the best
elementary school and closest to my house. It's called Dong Tao School
o Did you go to a co-educational school?
 Yes, I did. I had good memories in that school. I gained a lot of friends, both boys and girls.
o What was your favourite subject as a child?
 Well, I used to be very passionate about drawing when I was a little girl. You know, it's fun to
work with pens and colors, because that's the time when I can immerse myself in my own creative
world.
 I liked Maths a lot when I was a kid. Solving word problems were very interesting for me. I’d
always get high scores in exams.
o Who was your favourite teacher?
 My math teacher. His name is Toan. He makes the lessons fun and interesting by putting math
problems into funny stories. That makes our lessons easier to understand and highly effective
o What is the education system like in your country?
 Our country follows the British education system so it revolves mainly around research rather than
practice. However, in recent times, with the emergence of the Internet and smart classrooms, there
has been a significant change.
o Do you think your country has an effective education system?
 I think my country has an effective education system. The first thing is that the teachers are
inspirational and passionate about teaching. Facilities are equipped with modern. That motivates
students in my country to win many international awards in study as well as research.

 What are you studying now?
o I am currently a 3rd year student at Hung Yen University of Education. My major is
English so I'm learning English skills and my second foreign language is Chinese
 What is your area of specialization?
o My area of expertise is Chinese. If I had to categorize my area of expertise, English is the
main subject that I am studying at the university level.

 Hung Yen is the province where I have lived since I was born. Hung Yen is famous for its

IELTS SPEAKING PART II (LONG TURN)
Part 2 of the IELTS Speaking test lasts between 3 and 4 minutes (including 1 minute preparation
time).
EXAMPLE TASKS
Example 1). Describe a place you have visited that you have fond memories of.
You should say:
where this was
why you went there
what you did there
and what it was about the place that makes it so memorable.
Example 2). Describe your favourite personal possession.
You should say:
what this possession is
when you first got it
when you use it
and why it's so important to you.
TIPS:
1. Use the 1 minute preparation time well (Sử dụng tốt thời gian chuẩn bị 1 phút)
Think about how you would answer the question in your own language, then write down as many ideas as
possible in English (use your 1 minute preparation time wisely and make notes of the points you'd like to
make. )
2. Tell the truth (Nói sự thật)
Say what you really think, talk about you real life, and give real examples. Examples are really important;
whenever you don't know what to say, give an example from your own experience. The question will help
you with the structure of your talk. The introduction can include the item itself and maybe a brief
description. The main body of your talk could describe the situation when you acquired the object and go
on to explain when you use it. You can then end with an explanation of why the object is so important.
3. Don't worry about grammar (Đừng lo lắng về ngữ pháp)
You haven't got time to think about passives or conditionals. Focus on answering the question - ideas and
vocabulary.
4. Try to avoid giving a very dry, unimaginative introduction (Cố gắng tránh đưa ra một lời giới
thiệu quá khô khan, thiếu sáng tạo) such as 'The object I'm going to describe is ....'. Get your talk off to
a memorable start with something on the lines of (Bắt đầu bài nói chuyện của bạn với một khởi đầu
đáng nhớ với một cái gì đó trên dòng): 'If I was about to lose everything and could only save one thing it
would be my ...', or 'I've got several things that mean a lot to me but the one that really stands out is my ...'
5. If you're concerned about not having enough to talk about for 1 to 2 minutes or running out of
time before you've finished, the answer is to practise as often as possible. Time yourself and ask a

IELTS SPEAKING PART III (TWO-WAY DISCUSSION)
In Part 3, you and the examiner discuss some topics related to the topic you spoke about in Part 2. The
time limit for Part 3 is about 3-4 minutes. The examiner will help you and move the conversation along.
So if your Part 2 (Long Turn) topic was "Describe something you bought recently," Part 3 might be
about buying habits in the UAE, consumers, materialism, shopping, consumer protection, or differences
between shops now and in the past, or a prediction about shopping in the future.
If your Part 2 (Long Turn) topic was "Describe a teacher you had in school," Part 3 might be about
education, training, the internet and education, changes in education in the last twenty years, the
importance of training, etc.

TIPS:
1. If you need time to collect your thoughts use expressions (sparingly) like: 'That's a good question.',
'Well, let me think ...'.
2. Don't forget to avoid short, 'yes', 'no' answers. Try to offer examples to back up a statement.
3. Help make your contributions memorable. Try explaining a point using a short, personal anecdote.
4. If the examiner asks a question that you don't understand, take control of the situation with questions
such as those that appear below. Responding like this will show evidence of your communication skills.

A) If the examiner uses a word or phrase that you don't understand, say something like:
"Sorry but could you explain what you mean by ........" or
"I haven't come across that word/expression before. Could you explain what you mean?"
B) If you simply didn't hear something that was asked, respond with:
"Excuse me, I didn't quite catch that. Could you say that again?"
"I'm sorry, but would you mind repeating that?"
C) If you want to make sure you've understood what the examiner has asked you could say:
"Do you mean ........"
"When you say ........, do you mean/are you asking ........?
Successful students:
 Comment on the question
 Relate the question to their own experience
 Divide up their answers
 Use modals (could, might, may) the past perfect, and future tenses correctly
