Madam Rides the Bus

Valli's character

In Madam Rides the Bus there was a girl named Valliammai who was called
Valli for short. She was eight years old and very curious about things. Her
favourite pastime was standing in the front doorway of her house, watching
what was happening in the street outside. Curiosity about the things
surrounding her made way towards gaining the worldly knowledge. She was
fascinated by the view of the town yet she did not get down the bus in her
temptation. Valli was a very courageous ,sensitive, self-respecting and intelligent girl. She
was only 8 years old but behaving like a more mature woman than her age. She wanted to
ride a bus so she started collecting every penny came to her by avoiding every temptation
for buying toys and other playing instruments . Finally she had been collecting the required
money and also find out the fair time by listening the conversation between her neighbours
and asked some questions about the journey and by this journey she realized the major
difference between death and life
A Triumph of surgery
Character of Mrs Pumphrey
Mrs Pumphrey was quite a rich and resourceful lady with a large number of servants and maids. She
was passionately attached to her little pet dog, Tricki. She was much worried about Tricki’s miserable
condition. Tricki had become hugely fat and listless. She thought he was suffering from malnutrition. So,
she started giving Tricki malt, cod-liver oil and a bowl of Horlicks at night. Being overindulgent, Mrs
Pumphrey even ignored Dr Herriot’s advice. The doctor knew that Tricki’s only fault was his greed for
food. He had advised Mrs Pumphrey to cut down food and sweets for Tricki. He also advised her to
give him plenty of exercise. The dog was to be kept on a very strict diet. For Mrs Pumphrey, it was very
difficult for her because she pampered Tricki like a spoiled child. This only compounded Tricki’s misery.
His condition worsened. He lost appetite and started vomiting. Mrs Pumphrey was impractical but very
compassionate and caring. She and her staff arranged all comforts, beds, cushions and toys for Tricki.
She constantly enquired about his health from Dr Herriot. She gratefully thanked Dr Herriot for saving
Tricki’s life and called it "a triumph of surgery". Had she been a little more practical and disciplined,
things might have not gone that far.

Character of Dr James Herriot


Dr James Herriot, was a competent veterinary surgeon. He was really worried about
Tricki.Tricki was a dog .e understood that the real fault of the dog was his greed for food. He
never refused food. He was a practical person.He has a lot of common sense and is also
tactful.He ,at once, understand the illness of Tricki.He advises accordingly that Tricki should be
taken to the Surgery. He is kind-hearted and jovial kind of fellow. He knows that Tricki would be all right
when regulating his diet. The veterinary surgeon is a bit selfish also. He wants to keep Tricki for a long
time. This means he would get a good supply of things from Mrs. Pumphrey. But it does not show his
meanness. It is merely out of humour and fun. He treats Tricki by regulating his diet in a short period.
Then he returns Tricki to Mrs. Pumphrey. This shows that he is full of common sense.

Give a character sketch of Lencho.

Ans – A Hardworking Farmer – Lencho was a simple man and a hardworking farmer. He worked like an
ox in his field.

Love For Family – Lencho’s entire crop was badly destroyed by the hailstorm. So, he became very sad as
he was worried about his family.

An Optimistic Person – Although his only source of living was taken away, he didn’t lose hope. He had
his last hope in God. He was confident that God would help him in his distress.

An Innocent Man – Lencho didn’t know that there was no such living person as God who could send him
money, which shows his innocence.

Strong Believe in God – Lencho had firm faith in God as he sought help from God when his crop was
destroyed. He wrote Him to send a hundred pesos. But when he received seventy pesos, he called the
post-office employees a bunch of cooks. He rewrote a letter to God from the remaining thirty pesos,
which shows his firm faith in God.

Character sketch of Hari Singh

Hari Singh was a small time thief.. Hari Singh was not his actual name and he kept changing names so
that the police could not get hold of him. He was a liar as well because he even lied to Anil that he could
cook. His main job was to befriends with people and then deceive them and rob them and run away . He
was staying with Anil a kind hearted man who trusted Hari Singh but Hari took the advantage of his trust
and at night when Anil was asleep he robbed him. He ran off but as he was about to escape he stopped
and remembered the promise made by Anil to teach him. so his urge to receive an education compelled
him to return to Anil . He quietly kept the moneyback at its place and he learnt the value of trust and
friendship.

Bholi’s Character

Bholi was a simple and neglected girl. She was the fourth daughter of Ramlal. Her real name was
Shulekha. She was an introvert and innocent child, hence she came to be called 'Bholi' means 'the
simpleton'. Within the two years of her age, two unfortunate events occured to her. First, she fell of the
cot and second, she had an attacked of small-pox. One left her brain slightly damaged and the other left
pock marks all over her body. Bholi was a neglected child, even looked down upon by her own family.
This made her under-confident. But, then she went to school. She got there a very kind teacher and she
began to acquire confidence and knowledge. In the course of time she became a knowledgeable and
educated person. Indeed, one can transform herself if provided with a positive and kind environment.

Matilda’s Character
Matilda Loisel is the main character of the story ‘The Necklace’. Matilda was a beautiful young lady. She
was married to a poor clerk. She always wanted to live a life like rich people; full of luxuries. But, she felt
sorry about her economic and social status.

Matilda was a tactful lady. She convinced her husband to buy her a new dress for a party. And also she
borrowed a necklace for a day. But, she lost that necklace and this lead to extreme suffering and sorrow
for Matilda and her husband. They had to live in poverty for almost ten years.

Matilda was of a showy nature. She aspired to look rich. She used to show off things that she didn't had.
She loved the luxurious lives of rich women. And this envy of her presents detrimental consequences
before her. Had she known the importance of living a simple life, she would not have suffered.

Anne Frank’s Character

Anne Frank is the young writer of The Diary of a Young Girl. She emerges as a playful yet introspective
teen forced to live under extraordinary and trying conditions. Over the course of The Diary, Anne seems
to grow from an impudent and stubborn girl into an emotionally independent young woman.

Despite having a loving family and several friends, Anne is unable to share her thoughts with any of
them. Instead, she turns to her diary for this purpose. She is close to her father. But, in her mind, even
he fails to provide her with the emotional comfort she seeks. She has a rebellious spirit, desires to be
treated as an adult and hopes to make a name for herself on the world.

Accounts of Jewish suffering anguish Anne to the point of remorse at her own good fortune.
Nevertheless, she holds on to her ideals of honesty, hard work and self-improvement, and her trust that
humans are essentially good.

Sketch the character of Natalya. [The Proposal]

Ans. Natalya is one of the major characters in Anton Chekhov 's one act play "The Proposal".She is the
twenty five years old daughter of a rich and affluent landlord, Chubukov.

She is good looking, well educated and an efficient manager of her father's household. She has enough
knowledge of agricultural works. Natalya proves herself as an obstinate young lady having sound
knowledge of her family's property. She never allows Lomov to overpower her when the arguments
continue regarding the possession of Oxen Meadows and the superiority of -dogs. She is again very keen
to marry as she has reached her nuptial age already. When she comes to know about the marriage
proposal, she turns frantic and restless to bring Lomov back. She somehow wants to manage the
situation to get the proposal from Lomov. Now she changes her standpoint and surrenders her tenacity
in order to accept Lomov as her husband.She is egocentric too as she gets herself involved once again in
a bitter argument over the hunting dogs, and continues to quarrel . However she is an interesting
character.

Character Sketch of Griffin: The Invisible Man (Griffin) is given many names in the
novel. At first he is the Stranger who arrives at Iping, then he is the Voice that startles
everybody. However, his real name is Griffin. Though he is the protagonist of the story,
all his deeds are more like that of an antagonist. Griffin is an eccentric scientist. He was
very gifted but used his mind in a sinister way. He devised an experiment to become
invisible and then started looting and murdering whoever came in his way.

Griffin is a gifted young university medical student with albinism, who studies optical
density. He believes he is on the verge of a great scientific discovery. Working
reclusively in his flat, he invents a formula to bend light and reduce the refractive index
of physical objects, making them invisible. He experiments on himself and makes
himself invisible.

Griffin is very irritable and impatient. He loses his temper over petty things and starts
hurting others. He has lost his conscience and doesn’t feel sorry even after his burglary
led to his father’s death. Although Griffin is lonely and seems to have been
misunderstood from time to time, he fails to gain sympathy due to his murderous rage
and evil ways.

Ausable's Character

Ausable does not look very handsome, worthy of being called a secret agent - a detective. He is the
central character of the story "The Midnight Visitor". not physically very strong. There is nothing elegant
or mysterious about him. He is practical and shrewd. He is a well balanced individual. Even at gunpoint,
he keeps his cool and instantly cooks up a story to trap the villain, spy Max. He is an American who is
unable to cover up his American accent when he speaks French and German though he has lived in
France for over 20 years is practical and shrewd. He is a well balanced individual. Even at gunpoint he
keeps his cool and instantly cook up a story to trap the villain, spy Max. He outwits Max without moving
from his armchair. He uses his presence of mind. He tells two lies that not only save him and Fowler but
also give the momentum for Max to kill himself in an attempt to hide in the non-existent balcony. So
Ausable created a convincing story about the presence of a balcony. The qualities that are needed
for a person to be a secret agent are presence of mind, cleverness, being focussed etc. In this
wayAusable was different from other secret agents in more ways than one.

Lomov’s Character

‘The Proposal ' is a great comedy. Lomov is the main character. Lomov , a suspicious landowner is a
well -to - do unmarried man in his mid - thirties . He suffers from a variety of ailments . he starts
trembling when he is nervous .He also suffers from palpitations, is easily excitable and always gets
awfully upset. At such a moment his lips tremble and there's a twitch in his right eyebrow. Lomov
has been looking for a perfect for himself but has failed to meet an ideal match. He does not
consider Natalya to be ideally suited for him , but being practical, he takes into account his
advancing age and decides to make a compromise by proposing to her . However , he lacks self -
confidence and keeps beating about the bush instead of starting matters clearly. Lomov is
quarrelsome by nature and starts arguing about the rightful ownership of the '' Oxen Meadows
",whereas his actual purpose was to propose to Natalya . He is a comical character who has not
learnt the wise lesson of proper discrimination between the relative importance of different
situations. Instead of concentrating on the topic of proposing romantically, he keeps on foolishly
asserting his claim over “oxen meadows " . He is childish , unintelligent and foolish who stubbornly
keeps on arguing with the lady ,who seems to be the only person he could marry . He does not even
hesitate to hurl abuses at the Chubukov family when he gets into heated arguments over Oxen
Meadows and the dogs . His stubbornness and immaturity almost ruin the sole prospect of
marriage.But at the last he could propose to Natalya.

Anil’s Character
Anil is the main character of the story The Thief’s Story. Anil was a kind , simple and easy going
young man. He was tall and lean stature and interested in sports like Wrestling . He was not
very rich and could not offered to employee Hari as a cook. Hari was a thief. Hari Singh needed
a place to live in and a source of food. When he met Anil he told him that he wanted to work for
him. But Anil replied that he couldn't pay him. However, he told Hari Singh that if he could cook,
he could feed him. Saying so he took Hari Singh to his room over the Jumna Sweet Shop. Hari is
shown kindness by Anil as he takes him in as a cook and teaches him how to cook, read and
write. In spite of Anil being kind to him, Hari continues to cheat Anil by stealing his money while
he is sent to the bazaar for daily supplies

Anil is a person good at heart. He did not have sufficient income yet be hired Hari Singh. He felt
sorry for him and thought of providing him with at least food and shelter. When he realises that
Hari Singh does not know how to cook even what he claimed he knew, he still keeps him. The
story reaches the climax When Anil does not say anything to him despite knowing the fact that
he had stolen the money. He knew all still he pardoned all. It was quite generous for Anil to not
even utter a word about it. On the other hand he gave him some money to have a nice time. He
pardoned Hari as he came back on his own realising his mistake. Anil comes out to be a real
human as he pardons Hari despite knowing all. His good behaviour changed a thief into a good
person.
