Algeria is a land of biodiversity. It has a rich national heritage with several national
parks. Among them Tassili N’Ajjer National Park.
Tassili N’Ajjer National Park is situated in South East of Algeria at the borders of
Libya, Niger and Mali, covering an area of 72,000 sq. km. It is best known for its sandstorms
and mountains range, completed with impressive rock arches and paintings, and engravings of
other landforms. In 1986, UNESCO designated the Tassili N’Ajjer National Park a Biosphere
Reserve under its protection; it is second on the IUCN List of Protected Areas.
Tassili N’Ajjer National Park is home to a number of endangered fauna and flora. It is
the only place on earth where you can find the Saharan Cypress or Tarout, one of the rarest
and endangered tree and Saharan Myrtle. It is a home to different endangered animal species
like Barbary red deer and Dorcas gazelle.
