1.1 Identification of hand tools
1.1.1 Introduction
Hand tools are tools that are operated by hand, without the need for any external power source.
They are typically designed to be held and manipulated by hand, allowing for precise control and
maneuverability. Some common examples of hand tools include hammers, screwdrivers,
wrenches, pliers, and chisels.

Both hand tools and power tools have their own advantages and disadvantages. Hand tools are
generally more portable and versatile, as they do not require a power source. They are also often
more affordable and easier to maintain. However, they may require more physical effort to use
and may not be as efficient for certain tasks.

Power tools, on the other hand, offer greater speed and power, making them ideal for tasks that
require a lot of force or precision. They can also save a lot of time and effort, especially for
larger projects. However, power tools are typically more expensive and require a power source,
which may limit their portability and versatility.

1.2 Identification of power tools

Power tools are essential for efficient and effective electrical installations. There are several
types of power tools commonly used in this field. the power drill is a versatile tool that is used
for drilling holes and driving screws. It comes in various sizes and power levels, allowing
electricians to choose the right tool for the job. With the ability to quickly and accurately create
holes, power drills are indispensable for electrical installation work.

Furthermore, the wire stripper is another important power tool used in electrical installations.
This tool is designed to remove the insulation from electrical wires, allowing for proper
connections to be made. Wire strippers come in different sizes to accommodate various wire
gauges, ensuring precise and clean stripping. And also, the power saw is a valuable tool for
cutting through different materials, such as wood, plastic, and metal. Electricians often use
power saws to create openings for electrical boxes or to cut conduit and pipes. With the ability to
make precise cuts quickly, power saws greatly enhance the efficiency of electrical installations.

power tools play a crucial role in electrical installations. From power drills for drilling holes,
wire strippers for removing insulation, to power saws for cutting materials, these tools enable
electricians to work efficiently and accurately. Having the right power tools is essential for
successful electrical installation projects.
 Power drill: Used for drilling holes in various materials such as wood, metal, and
concrete. A drill is a power tool that uses a rotating drill bit. It is used to create holes in
various materials, such as wood, metal, and plastic. Drills are commonly used in

construction and carpentry work, as well as in plumbing and electrical work.

Figure 14 power Drills

 Circular saw: Used for cutting straight lines in wood, plywood, and other materials. The
primary function of power saws is to cut lumber, metal, plastics, and ceramics to length.
These tools rely on motors or engines and a blade to cut and shape the material. AC-
powered saws have various power outputs but are restricted to a set distance from a
power source.

Figure 15 Circular Saw

 Reciprocating saw: Used for cutting through various materials, including wood, metal,
and plastic. Outside of demolition and remodeling, a reciprocating saw can be used for
sawing through nails, metal sheeting, and pipes. They are also used for more specialist
jobs such as cutting concrete, stone, ceramic tile and even glass.

1.3 Power sources of power tools
Power tools have become an indispensable part of many industries and everyday DIY projects.
These tools are efficient, time-saving, and offer enhanced precision compared to traditional hand
tools. However, power tools require a source of power to operate. In this article, we will explore
the different sources of power for these tools and their advantages and disadvantages.
Electricity: The most common source of power for power tools is electricity. These tools are
powered by either a cord that needs to be connected to an electrical outlet or they could be
chargeable. The availability of electricity in most locations makes it a convenient and readily
accessible power source. Electric power tools are known for their consistent power output,
allowing for prolonged and uninterrupted use. They are suitable for indoor applications or
jobsites with access to electrical outlets. However, the limitation of cords can restrict mobility,
and the need for a nearby power source can be inconvenient in certain situations.
Mains electricity
Some people refer to mains electricity as '240 volt power', because that's the voltage that comes
out of a standard power point.
Standard power points are designed to take two-pin or three-pin plugs. One pin connects to
the active or live wire. The opposing pin connects to the neutral wire, which completes the
circuit. The bottom pin has no role in delivering electricity, but connects the tool to
the earth wire as a safety mechanism, in case there is a malfunction or 'short circuit'.

Battery: Battery-powered tools, also known as cordless tools, are becoming increasingly popular
due to their portability and convenience. These tools are powered by rechargeable batteries,
eliminating the need for cords and providing greater flexibility and mobility. Cordless tools are
ideal for working in remote or outdoor locations where electricity may not be readily available.
They offer freedom of movement and ease of use. However, battery-powered tools have limited
run time, requiring recharging or battery replacement. Additionally, they may have slightly less
power compared to their corded counterparts.

Pneumatic: Pneumatic or air-powered tools use compressed air as their energy source. These
tools are connected to an air compressor through a hose. Pneumatic tools are known for their
high power and durability, making them ideal for heavy-duty applications.

Page 17 of 52 Author/Copyright Module title Training module Version -1

Ministry of skill and Skill July, 2023
They offer consistent performance and can withstand continuous usage. Pneumatic tools are
commonly used in industries such as construction, automotive, and manufacturing. However, the
need for an air compressor and the accompanying hoses can limit mobility and may not be
practical for all types of projects.
Choosing the right power source for power tools depends on the nature of the project, location,
and user preferences. Each power source has its advantages and limitations. Electric tools offer
consistent power but require a nearby electrical outlet. Battery-powered tools provide portability
but have limited runtime. Pneumatic tools offer high power but require an air compressor setup.
Gasoline-powered tools provide mobility but require regular fueling and produce emissions. To
make an informed decision, consider the specific requirements of your project, available power
sources, and the convenience and mobility required. It is also essential to ensure the safety and
proper use of power tools by following manufacturer instructions and using appropriate safety
measures. By choosing the right power source, you can maximize the capabilities of your power
tools and complete your projects efficiently and effectively.

3.1. Electrical measuring device
Appropriate measuring device or equipment
Electrical measuring device and instruments are sensitive and delicate so extra care is necessary
in handling them. These are used to measure currents, voltages, resistances, wattages and other
important elements in electrical works.
3.1.1 Multi meter
is an electronic instrument used to measure the three basic electrical characteristics; voltage,
current & resistance. It has multiple function & act like ohmmeter, Voltmeter & ammeter & also
used for household wiring. The multimeter is a handheld device with a needle over a numerical
LCD digital display for indication purpose. It is also used to test continuity between two points
in an electrical circuit Categorized in analog and digital.
I. Analogue/Digital multimeter
Analog Multi-meters: - Analog multi-meters are instruments that are used to measure
electrical quantities such as Dc voltage, DC current, AC voltage & resistance

Figure 36 Analog Multi-meters

Operation of Analog Multimeter
The analog multimeter is very easy to use. With the knowledge of how to make voltage, current
and resistance measurements, it is only necessary to know how to use the analog multimeter.
For the measurement of current and voltage, there is no need of batteries in the analog
multimeter. But, if resistance is to be measured, batteries need to be installed in the multimeter.
Steps for the use of analog multimeter −
 Insert the probes into the correct connections.
 Set switch to the correct measurement types and range for the measurement to be made.
While selecting the range, ensure that the maximum range is above than that is expected.
The range of multimeter is then optimized for the best reading.
 Once the measurement is completed, it is wise precaution to place the probes into the
Page 35 of 52 Author/Copyright CCTV Camera Training module Version -1

voltage measurement sockets and set the range to maximum voltage. In this way if the
meter is accidently connected across a high voltage point, there is a little chance of
damage to the multimeter
II. Digital Multimeters
 Digital Multimeters: - The name implies, a digital multimeter is designed to perform a
variety of measuring tasks. With multiple inputs, settings and reading types it can give
accurate readings in most situations. It gives more accurate results. It is used to measure
electrical quantities such as voltage, current, resistance & capacitance by rotating the
knob to the labeled mark of the quantity that is to be measured. It can also be used for
checking continuity of an electrical circuit by placing both probes at the two ends
between which continuity is required to be observed.

Figure 37 digital multimeter

Measurements using Digital Multimeter
 In AC Voltage Mode − the applied input voltage is fed through a calibrated,
compensated attenuator, to a full-wave rectifier followed by a ripple reduction filter. The
resulting DC is fed to analog to digital converter (ADC) and finally to the display system.
 For Current Measurement −
 In DC Current Mode − the drop across an internal calibrated shunt is measured
directly by the ADC.
 In AC Current Mode − After AC to DC conversion, the drop across the internal
calibrated shunt is measured by the ADC
 In Resistance Mode − in the resistance range, the digital multimeter operates by
measuring the voltage across the externally connected resistor, resulting from a current
flowing through it from a calibrated internal current source.

Operation of Digital Multimeter
With the knowledge of how to make voltage, current and resistance measurements, the operation
of DMM is quite easy. It is necessary to install a battery in the DMM to power it.
Steps for the use of digital multimeter –
 Turn the meter ON.
 Insert the probes into the correct connecting ports.
 Set the dial (rotary switch) to the correct measurement type and range for the
measurement to be made. While selecting the range, ensure that the maximum range is
above than that is expected. Optimize the range for the best reading. If possible, enable
all the leading digits to not read zero, in this way the greatest number of significant digits
can be read.
 Once the measurement is completed, it is a wise precaution to place the probes into the
voltage measurement ports and turn the range to maximum voltage. So that if the meter
probes are accidentally connected across a high voltage point, there is a little chance of
damage to the DMM.
3.1.2. Megger or Digital insulation tester
use a high voltage, low current DC charge to measure the insulation resistance of the wires to
identify current leakage and faulty or damaged insulation, which can lead to arc faults, blown
circuits, and risk of electrical shock or fire.

Figure 38 Digital insulation tester

The Megger insulation tester is a small, portable instrument that gives you a direct reading of
insulation resistance in ohms or mega ohms. For good insulation, the resistance usually reads in
the mega ohm range.
3.1.3. Energy meter
When the electricity comes into a house, it first; all goes through a energy meter so this meter
measure how many ‘unit’ (kwh) of electrical energy is used. The reading is either digital or

analogue system.

3.1.4 Digital Watt meter
An instrument for measuring in watts the power flowing in a circuit. An instrument for
measuring in watts the power in an electric. It is used to measurements of power in distribution
and transmission power.

Figure 40 Digital watt-meter

3.1.5 Tong testers/Clamp meters:
are ammeters that can measure line current without the need to disconnect the wires where the
measurement occurs. They provide information about current draw and current continuity in
order to help users troubleshoot unpredictable loads and trends. In addition to measure line
current, it measures continuity, Voltage, Insulation resistance of the conductor & it does not
measure DC current.

Appropriate connections
In electrical wiring system, there are two types of connections. These are series & parallel
connections. Residential wiring system always advised the parallel connection systems.
Therefore to take a correct value of measurement first you know types of installation
connections, know measuring equipment’s and how to connect this equipment’s to the system.
To measure resistance & voltage connect the measurement equipment’s in parallel to the load but
to measure current connect the measuring equipment’s in series to the load.

Continuity: Continuity testers are used to test for a complete flow path in any de-energized low-
resistance device. A continuity tester is a common test tool to use when testing single-pole, 3-
way, and 4-way switches. For example, a 3-way switch has one terminal that is the "common"
terminal.

Insulation resistance: to measure the insulation heat resistance capability is essential to get
quality measurement of the wire/cables. This measurement is taken by digital insulation tester
(megger) & its unit expressed by ohm. While taking a measurement the final ring circuit, all
controlling & protection device must be at “ON” position.

3.2 Network cable testing and troubleshooting tools
A network cable testing and troubleshooting tool is used for the following purposes.
 To measure the length of a segment or network cable
 To detect loose connectors
 To identify an un-labeled network cable from all network cables.
 To find a break in the network cable
 To certify the cable installation
The following section describes the most common network cable testing and troubleshooting
tools.
3.2.1. Cable certifier
This device thoroughly tests a network cable and certifies that the cable installation meets a
special wiring standard such as Cat 5e, Cat 6, Cat 6a, and so forth. This device can check and test
total segment length, crosstalk, noise, wire map, resistance, impedance, and the capability to
transfer data at the maximum frequency rated for the cable.

Figure 47 Cable certifier

3.2.2. Time domain reflectometer
This device is used to measure the length of a network cable as well as the breaks in the cable.
This device transmits a signal on one end and measures the time the signal takes to reach the end
of the cable. You can also use this device to find breaks in the cable. For example, this device
can tell you approximately how far the break is located in the cable.

3.2.3. Basic cable tester
If you can't afford a network cable certifier, you can buy and use this device to manage your
network cables. Besides certifying the cable installation, this device provides all remaining
functionalities of a network cable certifier. It can test cable length, cross talk, and breaks in the
cable. It can also check whether the connectors on both ends of a network cable are properly
attached or not.

3.2.4. Tone generator and the probe
Besides certifying the cable installation, this device provides all remaining functionalities of a
network cable certifier. It can test cable length, cross talk, and breaks in the cable. It can also
check whether the connectors on both ends of a network cable are properly attached or not. For
example, if you are working on a patch-panel or switch and trying to figure out which network
cable connects back to an end-device (such as a PC), then you can use this device. Place a tone
generator at one end of the connection (end device), and use the probe on another side (switch or
patch-panel) to determine which network cable the tone generator is connected to.
