Centrality of the Soul-Person Diagram

How to Understand and Use This Diagram

This diagram is intended to illustrate that the Person and Character Level Model of Change is
built around the centrality of the soul as the person of the client. This Soul-Person is the
central and only person in everyone.

When describing the individual in terms of personhood and psycho-spiritual functioning, the
soul-person can be de@ined as the Central Organizing Entity, housed within the whole
person. The soul-person is considered central and organizing because the soul-person is the
entity, within the whole person, who has consciousness (experiences feel like something)
and agency (the ability to act freely and make its own choices). Every other aspect of the
whole person must be understood with reference to the soul-person who is this Central
Organizing Entity.

The diagram indicates that the immaterial Soul-Person is located within the Whole Person,
along with the material Brain and Body. The red highlighting of the Soul-Person circle also
emphasizes its centrality, with all the other parts of the diagram being understood with
reference to how they relate to and are used by the Soul-Person.

The Person and Character Level Model of Change has numerous and somewhat complex
ideas about how change takes place, and yet these abstract ideas must become practical
tools, as Character Mentors apply them to client situations and assist clients to understand
them, as well as use them.

At the top of the diagram are abstract ideas about Biblical Foundations of truth and
Psychological Principles for change. These abstract ideas are taught in the Person and
Character Level Model of Change material, but need to become practical tools for clients to
use (the “Input for Soul Person to Utilize” arrow in the diagram).

The soul-person of the client (along with the Character Mentor’s assistance*) takes these
abstract ideas and uses them to make changes in the functioning of the Brain and Body (the
“Output for Brain and Body Changes” arrow in the diagram).

This results in the client’s Whole Person beginning to experience changes in functioning —
functioning from their positive growth, with the added bene@it of greater resilience and
@lourishing (the “Changed Outward Attitudes and Actions” arrow in the diagram).

Again, though the Person and Character Level Model of Change starts with abstract
principles, it is crucial that these principles are translated into practical tools to use for
assisting clients to make concrete or tangible changes in their functioning.

*Character Mentor assistance is instructional (teaching the principles and how to use them). As well, Character
Mentors are continually mindful that goals are always inclusive of and primarily about character/virtue
strengthening.
