LABORATORY ACTIVITY
EXPERIMENTS ON OSMOSIS
LAB #3
Title: Osmosis
Aim: TO INVESTIGATE OSMOSIS IN A FRUIT
Apparatus: fresh fruit, knife, shallow dish, sugar
Method:
1. A fruit was peeled and cut in half.
2. Any seed was removed and a well was made.
3. The outside of each half of the fruit was also cut to make a flat surface for it
to stand on
4. The 2 flat halves were placed in a shallow dish with water. 5. A layer of
sugar was placed in one of the wells of the fruit. 6. The halves were left for 30
minutes.
7. After 30 minutes all observations were recorded.

Fruit Observations made

Half with sugar

The cut that was made it the fruit had water
Half without sugar The cut that was made in the fruit remained dry

Discussion:
Yes, osmosis took place in this experiment. The half with sugar mostly likely
underwent osmosis. As already stated, the fruit snack with sugar osmosis had
happened. The reason there was water in the center of this fruit half is because
in the middle there was sugar causing the middle of this fruit to have a lower
concentration of water, which then cause the water from outside the fruit to
move to this region of low water concentration. Osmosis did not occur in the
fruit cup without sugar because the concentration of water inside the fruit and
outside the fruit were the same.
Reflection:
This experiment was performed to investigate osmosis in a fruit. Osmosis is the
movement of water particles from a region of higher water concentration to a
region of lower water concentration through a partially permeable membrane.
After completing this experiment and lab the osmosis topic is now clear in my
head. Osmosis also happens in the kitchen because when you cook food and
put sauce in the liquid part of your dish, some part of the solute moves inside
the solid part of the food you are cooking.
Conclusion:
Yes, osmosis occurred in this experiment.
