on the process of osmosis using egg as a model.

RATIONALE
We have selected osmosis because Osmosis is one of the
most important ways that plants and animals achieve
homeostasis( Keeping the body's conditions stable makes it
possible for living things to survive).
Osmosis plays an important role in the human body, especially
in the gastro-intestinal system and the kidneys,
Yet people have very little awareness about it. Osmosis is
often confused with diffusion which is the process of
molecules moving from higher to lesser solution only.
Aim:
The aim of this experiment is to observe osmosis in a cell
using an egg kept in water and corn syrup.

Hypothesis:
Water will pass through the shell of an egg, to the side that
has a solution of higher concentration.
● Hypothesis (Water Egg) Weigh less, Little bit smaller,
Deflated, shriveled up
● Hypothesis (Corn Syrup Egg) Weigh more,Little bit
larger,Enlarged, puffy, big

Introduction:
Osmosis is a passive process and happens without any
expenditure of energy. It involves the movement of
molecules from a region of higher concentration to lower
concentration until the concentrations become equal on
either side of the membrane.
Any solvent can undergo the process of osmosis
including gases and supercritical liquids.
There are three types of osmotic conditions include-
hypertonic, isotonic, and hypotonic.
The different types of osmosis include:
1. Endosmosis- when a substance is placed in a
hypotonic solution, the solvent molecules move inside
the cell and the cell becomes rigid.
2. Exosmosis-when a substance is placed in a
hypertonic solution, the solvent molecules move out of
the cell and the cell becomes flaccid.
The factors affecting the rate of osmosis include:
1. Pressure.
2. Temperature.
3. Surface Area.
4. Water Potential.
5. Concentration gradient.
Material required:
● Eggs
● Balance String & Measuring Tape
● Balance
● Water
● 2 beakers
● Vinegar
● Corn syrup

Procedure:
1. Place eggs in vinegar to remove the shell.
2. Measure the weight using a balance.
3. Measure size of egg using string & measuring tape.
4. Place one egg in corn syrup, place another egg in water
for 24 hours.
5. Weigh and measure eggs again.
Observation:

● 24 hours in vinegar
1.bubbles come up from the egg
2. eggs are now floating, there is white foam (after 2
hours)
3. after 24 hours shell is soft, jelly like, and squishy

● 24 hours in water-
Egg has sunk, Looks larger
● 24 hours in corn syrup-
Egg looks shrivelled, soggy and brownish.
THE FIRST EGG WAS IN WATER WHEREAS SECOND EGG
WAS IN CORN SYRUP.
Results:

BEFORE AFTER
CORN SYRUP Weight : 67g Weight : 44 g
Size : 16.6cm Size : 16.6cm
WATER Weight : 77.4g Weight : 91.9g
Size : 16cm Size Size : 17.5cm

Conclusion:
● Water egg:
Got larger
Water moved into egg
Egg had a lower concentration
Water had a higher concentration

● Corn syrup egg:

Got smaller
Water moved out of the egg
Egg had a high concentration
Corn Syrup had a lower concentration

Precaution:
● Measure the egg cautiously.
● Do not touch eggs repeatedly.
● Be patient.

This experiment will make the process of osmosis easy to
understand. Measurement requires dexterity, exactness, and
coordination, as well as basic number sense skills. So these
skills will develop during measurement of eggs.observation skills
are also improved. It will also make science fun to learn.
