OSMOSIS: STUDY OF THE WATER MOVEMENT

Osmosis is the process by which water moves through a partially permeable membrane.
Water always flows from the side of the membrane that has a higher proportion of water
molecules (higher water potential) to the side that has a smaller proportion of molecules
(lower water potential):

OSMOSIS: STUDY OF THE WATER MOVEMENT IN EGGS:

OBJECTIVE: observe the movement of water in eggs in two different conditions.

MATERIALS:

➔ 3 eggs
➔ Vinegar
➔ two recipient
➔ salt
➔ natural water
➔ a balance

PROCEDURE:

1.Weight each egg and register it

2.Place each egg in a recipient with vinegar and leave it for 24 hours
3.The next day, remove the eggs from the recipient and register any visible change
4.Weight each egg again and register it
5.Put one egg in a recipient with salty water, and one in a recipient with natural water
.
BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT (expectations):

➢ What is going to happen to the egg on vinegar is that the vinegar will dissolve the
shell.
➢ What is going to happen to the egg on salty water is the egg will float in the salt water
➢ To the egg on natural water you will not see any change in it.

RESULTS:

● The weight of the first egg before doing the experiment was 71.8g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on vinegar the egg weight was of 77,5g

● The weight of the second egg before doing the experiment was 55,5g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on salty water the egg weight was of 61,73g

● The weight of the third egg before doing the experiment was 56,8g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on natural water te egg weight not change
OSMOSIS: STUDY OF THE WATER MOVEMENT IN POTATOS

OBJECTIVE: observe the movement of the water in slides of potatoes in different conditions.

MATERIALS:

➔ 1 potato
➔ two recipient
➔ salt
➔ natural water
➔ distilled water

PROCEDURE:

1. Prepare three recipient: one with water + 2 spoons of salt, one with natural water,
and one with distilled water
2. Peel the potato and cut 3 slides
3. Place one in each recipient
4. The next day, observe and register any change produced

BEFORE THE EXPERIMENT(expectations):

➢ What is going to happen to the potato in distilled water is that the potato will absorb
the water.
➢ What is going to happen to the potato in salty water is that the potato in the salt water
will become smaller.
➢ What is going to happen to the potato in natural water is that the potato will absorb
water and may change its texture over time.

RESULTS:

● The weight of the first potato before doing the experiment was 15,8g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on distilled water the potato weight was of 18,73g

● The weight of the second potato before doing the experiment was 9,3g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on pure water the potato weight was of 11,08g

● The weight of the third potato before doing the experiment was 9,9g, and then of
waiting 24 hours on salty water the potato weight was of 7,43g
