Egg Osmosis Lab

Objective: I can observe the effects of egg ,water, vinegar, and syrup. I can learn
how to prepare a naked egg.

Hypothesis:
If the naked egg is placed in vinegar, then the shell will dissolve. If the egg is placed in
water, then it will stay the same, with the syrup the egg will shrink.

Problem: What are the results of the egg when soaked in different solutions?
Pre-Lab Questions:
1. What happens when a cell is subjected to a solution where the water
concentration is higher than inside of the cell?
The cell will expand and the higher concentration will overtake most of the cell
that will cause it to expand. The liquid is going to the center
2. What happens when a cell is subjected to a solution where the water
concentration is lower than inside of the cell? The lower concentration will then
cause the cell to shrink. The liquid is going to exit the cell.
3. What happens when a cell is subjected to a solution where the water
concentration is equal to that of the inside of the cell?
The cell will stay the same and it will have an equal amount of liquid inside.
Materials:
● 3 eggs
● 3 cups
● 400 ml vinegar
● 100 ml water
● 100 ml syrup
● Small tray
Procedure:
Day 1: We left all three eggs in 100ml of vinegar for 24 hours to let the egg shells soften
inside their own cups that were then labeled A, B, C.

Day 2: We took out the eggs and measured each of them to find out their current
circumference, we then cleaned the three cups and put 100ml of vinegar in cup C,
100ml of water in cup A and 100ml of syrup in cup B. We put the the 3 eggs back in
each of the cups to let them soak for 24 hours and wait till the next day.

Day 3:We took the three eggs out and measured each of them to find out if any had
changed.

Quantitative Data:
Cups Solutions Initial Final Difference
circumference Circumference

Egg A : Water 14cm 14cm 0cm

Egg B: Syrup 13cm 14cm 1cm

Egg C : Vinegar 13cm 15cm 2cm

Qualitative Data:
Observation Before Observation After

Day 1 At first the egg was white The eggs all stayed the
and hard. same.

Day 2 We saw some of the eggs All the eggs were very soft
change color. The egg and expanded
shell was very thin.

Day 3 It smelled very strong and They were transparent and

the scent was powerful. very squishy.
The eggs didn't change much, only two out of the three eggs changed in
expanding.Based on what we saw the water and the syrup helped the egg expand and
the vinegar kept it the same. The egg stayed the same because the liquid was the same
which didn't make a difference within the egg.
Analysis Questions:
1. Create a bar graph showing the difference in initial and final weight for each egg.
Create a title and properly label all x -axis

2. How did the results compare to your pre-lab predictions?

The results compared to our pre-lab predictions by the egg increasing, there were
many predictions but not many matches.

3. In a controlled experiment you should only change one variable and you hold others
constant.List three variables you held constant during this experiment.
Three variables that we held constant during this experiment were the eggs, cups, and
syrup.
4. Which of the solutions were hypertonic? What is your evidence. We didn’t have a
hypertonic solution but we did have an isotonic solution of Egg A and B had the same
circumference before and after getting soaked.

5. Which of the solutions was hypotonic? What is your evidence? Egg A

increased by 1 cm which made us think it was hypotonic.
6. Draw an illustration for each setup showing movement of water between the
egg and each solution.
7. A student’s experiment showed that her egg gained mass overnights with the
vinegar and distilled water. She had about +1% change for distilled water. She
had hypothesized that the egg’s mass would not change significantly with
vinegar. She concluded that her hypothesis about vinegar was not supported
because it did change in mass. Her teacher told her that the data indicated that
her hypotheses were supported, especially with the 10 % change for the distilled
water. What did the teacher mean?
The teacher meant that the students hypothesis was somewhat correct because
the egg gained weight on water and vinegar. She thought her hypothesis was
wrong because it only supported the vinegar.

8. What is the biggest source of error for the lab? What improvements can be
done to the lab?
The biggest source of error for this lab would be the fact of not having the
materials in place or having the wrong amount of liquid or the wrong
measurements of the eggs.Improvements that can be done to the lab would be
keeping a data worksheet.

Conclusion: In conclusion we didn't see a huge change with the eggs .We
wanted to see what would have happened when the eggs were soaked in
different solutions. As a group we made different solutions with the cup. We used
syrup, water, and vinegar to observe the difference between all 3. The solutions
found in this lab are hypotonic, hypertonic , and isotonic solutions. Egg B is
hypertonic because it decreased by 1 cm and Egg A is isotonic because it stayed
the same. Egg C is hypotonic because it increased by 2 cm. This shows how the
egg reacts in different solutions as shown in our experiment.
