What is IS0 19650?

ISO 19650 specifies how building information models (BIMs)

should manage information over the lifecycle of an asset.

There are many similarities between this framework and UK

BIM Framework and it closely aligns with current UK 1192
standards.
There are multiple countries that adopt ISO 19650 standards.

ISO 19650 is viewed as the "Global BIM Standard" by BIM

professionals
In an effort to raise awareness of ISO 19650 in the United
States, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) and
the Center for Digital Built Britain (CDBB) have joined forces.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has been signed

between NIBS and CDBB to promote better information
management within the design and construction industries.

In the US, the BIM Alliance will adapt the UK program and
materials as a guide for developing a national roadmap that
aligns with ISO 19650 international standard.
Aiming to harmonize the regulatory framework and ensure the
best international cooperation in the construction industry, it
replaces British PAS, particularly PAS 1192-2: 2013.

It is primarily intended for use by:

Those involved in the design, construction, and

commissioning of built assets;

Maintenance and management of built assets once they

have been completed.
It consists of 5 parts:

Part 1 – general concepts and principles;

Part 2 – delivery phase of assets;
Part 3 – operational phase activities of assets;
Part 4 – information exchange;
Part 5 – security-minded approach to information
management.
Some of the benefits of ISO 19650

Construction/management/maintenance of works
involves controlling the information needed by the client
and methods for verifying it, defining processes and
deadlines, and investing financial and time resources;
Results achieved at the end of the process are in
accordance with the requirements defined at the
contract stage;
An exchange of information between the different
stakeholders involved in the life cycle of an asset.
The ISO 19650 workflow includes these 8 steps:

1. assessments and needs;

2. invitation to tender;
3. tender response;
4. appointment;
5. mobilization;
6. collaborative information production;
7. information model delivery;
8. and project closure.
