CHASING BY PIRATE BOAT WHILE ON THE WAY TO RESCUE SETIA HIJRAH

CHRONOLOGY OF EVENT
Vessel situation
Both main engine failure and cause vessel drifted and grounded at Kuala Baram
Vessel location : Log 04’ 358’0’N Lat 113’55’0.7E
Weather Sea/Swell :2m, 2 -3Knot
Sounding tank done. Contact Point: Stbd side at accommodation side.
1042hrs - DPA Firdhaus informed GMD Datuk Azmi Ahmad and activate ERT.
- All ERT been notified and request team to gather at ECC Room. Others via
video/tel-conference.

1045hrs ERT members assemble at ECC Room & others via video-conference. DPA Firdhaus
briefed the members on the incident and to carry out their task as below;
DPA Nadzaruddin
- To inform Designated Authority (Malaysia Marine Department)
- To inform MMCC
1049hrs Received call from Master Setia Hijrah and update on situation;
- No flooding or water ingress detected
- Sounding tank done.
- Contact Point: Stbd side at accommodation side. Frame number 75 – 80
1056hrs DPA Firdhaus call out Master Setia Jihad and brief incident situation and request
assistant to tow Setia Hijrah.
Master notify that current location of Setia Jihad is 30NM to Kuala Baram and
require 2 hours to be arrived at Setia Hijrah location. Vessel to call back and update.
1059hrs DPA Firdhaus continued with ERT members and request update;
DPA Firdhaus instructed Capt Pragesan to get GA Plan and determine the affected
area.
1104hrs Rcvd call from Setia Jihad informed that will activate to rescue Setia Hijrah. Vessel
currently at Fairly Oilfield (04.56.4N 114’03.25E). Vessel is 21.8NM from Kuala
Baram and will using full speed 10knots. Estimated time to reach at Setia Hijrah is
2hrs.
1105hrs DPA Firdhaus continued with ERT members;
- GM Abu/ Capt pragesan advised vessel to check draft and dept. of water of
Kuala Baram and to check if there any water ingress due to impact.
- Wan Najlin (Legal Dept) update on deductible Insurance coverage - RM365K
(hull) . Additional RM90K (engine). Crew coverage (TBA)
1110hrs During discussion on way forward to rescue Setia Hijrah. DPA Firdhaus received call
from Setia Jihad informed that they are under threat. The unknown boat (suspected
pirate boat) chasing them with high speed. Master activated emergency alarm.
Master update;
- Already activated FIFI and pirate boat unable to board the vessel.
- Sea was in bad weather and extra look out carry out by SSO
- Current location is 10NM from Setia Hijrah. Vessel notify their planning to assist
Setia Hijrah. Vessel will check draft/water dept before approaching Setia Hijrah
and plan to carry out de-ballast.

- Vessel to carry out risk assessment.
- Vessel to check draft before approaching Setia Hijrah.

1056 : Received call from DPA instruction to render assistance to tow Setia Hijrah
as she is grounded at posn ( 04°35.8 N 113°55.70 E )
1104 : Proceed to Setia Hijrah given position. After checked position vessel de ballast and
adjusted ship draft according to Kuala Baram current tide with ukc >3.50 metres.
1109 : While passage at position 04°55.2 N 114°02.80 E detected on Radar 1 unknown high
speed boat chasing from stern . Distance about 1.5 nm and closing.
1110 : Call CSO to informed that vessel are currently under threat and request for assistance
1111 : Sound EMERGENCY ALARM followed by VERBAL on PA by Master . All
Crew Muster on the bridge . Conduct briefing and initiate security team. Send SSAS alert.
1115 : Active FIFI system & prepare fire hose to prevent the pirate boat from boarding the vessel
1125 : Received call from CSO informing that the APMM boat is on the way to rescue.
1141 : APMM petrol boat arrived and chase the pirate boat
1141 : The pirate boat manage to escape . APMM instruct vessel to continue passage with
full speed while at the same time she is escorting
1146 : Vessel arrived at Setia Hijrah location and prepared for towing and update all information
regarding rescue to CSO.
1155 : Vessel rescue Setia Hijrah and tow back to Labuan.
