The Tyrannosaurus rex, also known as T-rex, was one of the largest land animals to have ever lived.
The T-rex could grow to 12 metres in length. If we compared it now, it would be a little longer than a
bus. It lived in what is now western North America and may have even been partly covered in feathers.
The T-rex was a hungry meat eater and the best hunter with strong mouth and had up to 60 teeth. Some
of these teeth could grow to be almost thirty centimetres long. The T-rex was a carnivore, meat eater,
and hunted other dinosaurs. Scientists aren’t sure how fast the T-rex could run, or if it could even run at
all. In 1990, a man found the most complete skeleton of a T-rex ever found. It was sold to a museum for
eight million dollars, the highest amount ever paid for dinosaur bones.

Lately, some people have been concerned that the explosion in text messaging among young people
is having a negative effect on their literacy skills. However, a recent study at the department of
communication and science at City University in London compared the spelling and punctuation of 11
and 12-year-old texters and non-texters, finding no significant differences between the two groups. It is
important when texting to be fast and concise. This is to save on time and space. A non-texter who is
unfamiliar with texting will feel lost when they see abbreviations, acronyms and emoticons. For texters,
this ’language’ is easy to read and easy to write. The debate about effects of texting started a few years
ago. Teachers began noticing examples of the harmful texting language in their students’ exam papers.
One case, a 13-year-old Scottish girl who wrote an entire description of her summer holidays in text
language, became famous. Her teacher sent a sample of the essay to a national newspaper and readers
sent hundreds of letters giving their opinion.

Dear Manager,
You know that I work for your company as a guide. It’s my job to make everything go well for the
tourists. But something unpleasant happened last weekend. Last Saturday I met a group of tourists at the
airport. I normally take our tourists to “The Sheraton Hotel”, but this time it was hosting an international
conference. So I took them to another hotel “The Navruz Hotel”. I hadn’t used the service of “The Navruz

they said the hotel was full and didn’t have any free room. Although I had booked rooms beforehand,
the manager said that somebody phoned a day before and said that we wouldn’t need the rooms. The
manager insisted it was I who made that phone call. I was very annoyed but the manager phoned other
hotels and found rooms but in four different hotels. I don’t know who made that phone call. I hope you
will understand and won’t blame me for what happened that day.
Sincerely, Salima Anvarovna.
