the big picture
Radio access networks (RANs) are key components of wireless infrastructure, connecting devices such as phones
and computers to other parts of the network through radio links. Traditionally, RAN equipment was proprietary,
with different vendors using their own interfaces, protocols and software. That left communications service
providers (CSPs) feeling they were locked into a single vendor, leading to limited competition in the supply chain
and innovation stagnation.

The shine has well and truly worn off 5G as a transformative technology. The telecoms industry has seen
four years of non-standalone 5G (5G NSA) consumer mobile services, with 5G RAN connected to the same
backhaul, core network and IT stacks as 4G. The promise of standalone 5G (5G SA) has been perpetually
on the horizon, and with it 5G network slicing, multi-access edge computing (MEC), new service models

Worldwide, approximately 150 mobile network operators (MNOs) are running tests of Open RAN in labs or proof-of-
