In bisecting angle technique, film (blue) is placed as close to the tooth as possible without bending

the film. The central ray (green) should be directed perpendicular to the imaginary line that bisects
the long axis of the tooth and film.

Horizontal angulation is adjusted so that the position indicating device (orange) is parallel to the line
connecting the buccal surfaces of premolars and molars (red) to avoid overlapping of proximal
surfaces. Vertical angulation has to be correct as an increase vertical angulation cause
foreshortening and decrease vertical angulation cause elongation.

Size #2 film is usually used for adults whereas size #0 film is used for children with small mouth.
There are a few advantages by using this technique which include comfortable in patient’s mouth,
able to take radiographs even without receptor holder, simple and quick. However, disadvantages
include inaccurate image projection, non-reproducible and poorly shown periodontal bone might
happen.
