The Nikki Haley Contradiction

Political cartoons are the most effective form of communication since they are almost

instantly understood. Not only do they communicate issues efficiently in such little time, but

their use of ethos, pathos, logos, are incredibly strategic. Using an analysis of the background

material and the persuasive power of a cartoon. I would like to analyze a Dana Summers

illustration on the controversy between Nikki Haley, Donald Trump, and Joe Biden in this essay.

Dana Summers is the creator of one of the best political cartoons of our President Joe

Biden, according to the U.S. News. The image presents on the left side: Nikki Haley who is our

former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, saying the following “Chao follows

Trump” with an unsure facial expression, to the right is Joe Biden leading a pack of chaotic

events such as: wars, inflation, border issues, polls, gaffes, and Hunter Biden. This all suggests

that chaos actually follows President Biden in contradiction of her statement of our past

President Donald Trump. In the past Nikki Haley was on CNN when she was asked about her

strategy to overtake Donald Trump, she had stated the following: “I agree with a lot of his

policies, but the truth is, rightly or wrongly, chaos follows him”. She proceeded talking about the

well-being of the country “We have too much division in this country, and too many threats

around the world to be sitting in chaos once again.” insinuating that if Trump was in office again,

we would be in chaos.

Dana Summers refers to himself as a conservative on his personal social media platform

X. Dana works on the Editorial Cartoon Service on the Tribune Content Agency website, which

is a company that publishes many political cartoons and various relevant stories. On that said

website, Dana’s work is to be described as “clever” and “visually arresting” with a focus on

various political issues such as the economy, weather, government, and pop culture. His resume

is impressive, with his background coming from being a cartoonist for The Orlando Sentinel for

three decades. With his past working on the Dayton, Ohio and Fayetteville, North Carolina

newspapers, he has the credibility of national perspective on relevant topics.

Nikki Haley has a history with former President Donald Trump, during Trump’s

presidency Nikki went from being governor of South Carolina to U.S. Ambassador to the United

Nations within the Trump Administration. She quickly stepped down from ambassador on

December 31st, 2018. Trump's impeachment started on December 18th, 2018 and was officially

impeached on January 13th, 2021. Today, Nikki is running for president for the Republican

Party, she currently has seventeen delegates while Trump has thirty, meaning she is in second

place for her party. The controversy that follows her is mostly about her being what is called a

rino, a term used to label those who are disloyal to their political party. This is because in her

fundraiser, “STAND WITH NIKKI”, we see multiple billionaire donors of the Democratic Party

like Dan Och. Additionally, Mark Pearson, who is a Republican that donates to the Democratic

Party such as the Biden Victory Fund multiple times, is seen to make generous donations as well.

Her relationship with Joe Biden currently consists of criticizing one another about their

individual speeches and actions. No evidence suggests that both Biden and Haley have worked

with one another in an acquainted setting before and after the campaigning started. Nor is there

evidence to suggest that both have had a friendship or colluded. There is a constant opinion

about Nikki Haley and her persona. To go along with the idea that she is a rino. Many believe

that she avoids trying to offend anyone and because of that, she will say anything to play both

sides. Her opposers claim that she lacks conviction.

Joe Biden has a history of issues and many incidents that have not been cleared up, in this

paper I will go over three major issues that are seen within the illustration such as inflation, the

border crisis, and war. Starting with his presidency, we know that he entered office during the

recovery of Covid-19. However, the point still stands that he is responsible for surging prices

rather than for abundant jobs. When it comes to the border, the Biden administration is

responsible for the worst border crisis in American history and places many American lives at

risk, according to the United States House Committee Oversight and Accountability. A hearing

took place on January 17th, 2024 about the Biden Administration’s Regulatory and Policy

Making Efforts to Undermine U.S. Immigration Laws. Thomas Homan, former Acting Director

of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who worked for the Trump Administration,

gives insight to what the border crisis looks like due to the Biden Administration. When

Chairman Comer asked Mr. Homan if he could describe how the Biden Administration has

hampered the ability of ICE officers and ICE prosecutors to enforce immigration laws, Mr.

Homan replied that the biggest issue with the border is that, if you instigate such a large-scale

crisis and promise that you can enter the country illegally, you will be quickly released. This is

because the Administration is not upholding the law. They have increased the number of

resources sent to the border in order to expedite processing and release times. Glenn Grothman,

who is our United States Representative from Wisconsin's sixth congressional district, asks Mr.

Homan about the numbers regarding the Trump administration. Stating that it has increased by a

ratio of almost thirty to one, thirty times as many people entering the country's interior as there

were two years ago. Mr. Homan answers that the total encounters are five times as many under

Biden’s Administration than Trump’s. Talking about percentages of people removed under

Trump versus under Biden, the percentages of 2.3 million and six hundred and six, it is all about

the number of persons released into the nation, not about percentages. Lastly, war is one of the

most important issues to the people. The U.S. is currently expecting Chinese aggression against

Taiwan and is involved in two wars: one in Ukraine and the other in Israel. The Biden

Administration has not only indulged in war but has given money to both countries Ukraine and

Palestine during a moment one of the roughest times in the economy.

With all of this in mind, this perfectly illustrates what Dana Summers conveys in

his illustration. Nikki, in the presidential election, criticizing her opponent within the same party

does not strengthen her case against the main opponent from the opposing political party, Joe

Biden. Not only that, but labeling Trump as chaotic is considered ignorant, particularly when

Biden is evidently chaotic himself and is currently in office leading that trail. This carefully

designed irony offers a comedic assessment of the difficulties involved in developing political

narratives. Nikki's critique loses its potency when confronted with the reality of the current

administration.
