1. Differentiate art songs from opera.

● A solo piece from an opera, oratorio, or cantata is an aria while a stand-alone


(or sometimes part of a set or series, but not a full-blown cantata) is a song. In
general, art songs are going to be more suited to young or beginning singers.
● An art song is a Western vocal music composition, usually written for one voice
with piano accompaniment, and usually in the classical art music tradition. By
extension, the term "art song" is used to refer to the collective genre of such
songs.
● a drama set to music and made up of vocal pieces with orchestral
accompaniment and orchestral overtures (see overture entry 1 scene 2) and
interludes (see interlude sense 2) specifically : grand opera Beethoven
composed only one opera.
