Overview Discovery Setup:
Discovery is available as a separate subscription from the rest of the Now Platform.

Request Discovery Plugins:

Discovery is available as a separate subscription from the rest of the Now Platform and
requires the Discovery (com.snc.discovery) plugin.
To purchase a Discovery subscription, we need to contact our ServiceNow account
manager or sales representative. When the Discovery plugin is activated, the following
plugins are also activated:
• The Cloud Provisioning and Governance Core (com.snc.cloud.core) plugin
• The ITOM Licensing (com.snc.itom.license) plugin

Role Required: admin

1. Request, Install & Activate the plugins for Discovery (com.snc.discovery) plugin
from ServiceNow store.

Procedure:

• Navigate to All > System Applications > All Available Applications > All.
• On the All Applications page, select Request Plugin to open the Activate
Plugin form on Now Support.

Fig. 1
• On Now Support, select the link to access the Now Support Service Portal Service
Catalog.

• Select our instance.

• Select Actions > Activate Plugin.
• On the Activate Plugin form, provide the following information.
I. What is your target instance
II. Which plugin would you like to activate
III. Select Maintenance Date and Time

For Example:

Fig. 2
• Select Submit.
Methods of Discovery Setup:
There are two method of Discovery setup.

1. Guided Setup
2. Without Guided Setup

Guided Setup:

• Use this method if you want to set up everything you need to use Discovery,
including a MID Server.
• Discovery guided setup provides a sequence of tasks that help you
configure Discovery on your ServiceNow instance. To open Discovery guided
setup, navigate to Guided Setup > ITOM Guided Setup.

Fig. 3

For more information about using the guided setup interface, see Using guided setup.

Without Guided Setup:

Use this method if you want to set up each component of setup separately. You can
configure MID Servers, credentials, and roles separately, then configure one of the
discovery types from the Discovery Schedule.
Without Guided Setup Discovery Setup: (Manual Discovery Setup)
In this topic we will discuss about without Guided Setup Discovery process (Manual
Discovery Setup).
Role required: discovery_admin

Procedure
1. Install one or more MID Servers on physical or virtual servers that meet
the MID Server system requirements and configure them to communicate
with the appropriate ServiceNow instance.
2. Set the credentials on the instance for all the computers, printers, and
network gear in your environment.
3. Define and run Discovery schedules.
4. Validate the Discovery results.

Install one or more MID Servers on physical or virtual servers.

• Ensure MID Server connectivity by navigating to Discovery > MID Servers.
• If the MID Servers are configured properly, they appear in the list of MID Servers.

MID Server supported systems:

1. Minimum Specification:

o Windows Server 2012

o CPU – 2 CPUs @ 2GHz
o HDD – 40GB
o RAM – 8GB
2. Recommended Specification:

o Windows Server 2016 or higher

o CPU – 2 CPUs @ 2GHz
o HDD – 40GB
o RAM – 16GB
Note: .NET Framework version 3.5 or above is required for Service Mapping support and
for Windows pattern-based discovery.
Mid Server Installation Process:

a. Create the MID Server user account and grant the appropriate role to this
user.
b. Download the installer file or Zip File for the host machine.
Note: Download any one of them.

Fig. 4
c. Install the MID Server on a Linux or Windows host.
d. Validate the MID Server to ensure that it is trusted to access credentials
used by the instance for automations.
e. Test connectivity between the MID Server and the instance for automatic
upgrades.
f. Optionally, deploy multiple MID Servers in your network for load balancing or
when domain separation is enabled.

g. Make Sure Basic Authentication is enabled, a user name and password

must be provided.

o Navigate to System > Users.

o Create new record.
o Assign “mid_server” role to created account.
o Set password and save the record.
o Reset the password.

h. Make sure that no firewalls are blocking communication between the MID
Server and the instance.

Credential Setups:
• Create, Set and test your credentials the credentials on the instance for all the
computers, printers, and network gear in our environment.

Credentials for Windows devices (using the WMI protocol) are provided by the logon
configured for the MID Server service on the Windows server host. Credentials
for UNIX, vCenter, and SNMP must be configured on the
instance. Discovery automatically determines which credentials work for a particular
computer or device.
Role required: admin

Procedure
Navigate to one of these modules:
1. Discovery > Credentials
2. Service Mapping > Credentials
3. Orchestration > Credentials

Fig. 5
Note: Click any one of them:
4. Click New.

Fig. 6

Fig. 7

• On the Credentials page, click a link for the credential type which we want to
discover and complete the form.

Fig. 8
Refer to the documentation for the credential type you selected for details.
• You can submit a credential record first and then test it later, or test the
credential immediately before saving it.

• Credential testing is supported for these credential types:

I. SSH private keys

II. Windows

III. SNMP v3

IV. VMware

V. JDBC

VI. JMS
• Under Related Links, click Test credential.

Note: Credentials are encrypted at all times during the test.

Fig. 10
• Complete the fields in the Test Credential dialog box.

• Test credentials dialog box.

• Click OK to begin the test.

Define and run Discovery schedules.

A Discovery schedule determines what horizontal Discovery searches for, when it runs,
and which MID Servers are used. Create a Discovery schedule for our local environment
or a schedule for discovering the resources in our organizational network.

Roles required: admin, discovery_admin.

We can use a Discovery schedule to launch horizontal Discovery, which uses probes,
sensors, and pattern operations to scan our network for CIs.

Use this procedure to create a schedule manually from the Discovery schedule form.
Note:
Use the Discovery schedule module in the Discovery application to:

• Configure a schedule to discover resources in your cloud service account.

• Configure a schedule to discover certificates from URL scans.
• Configure device identification by IP address or other identifiers.
• Determine if credentials are used in device probes.
• Name the MID Server to use for a particular type of Discovery.
• Create or disable a schedule that controls when the Discovery runs in your
network.
• Configure the use of multiple Shazzam probes for load balancing.
• Configure the use of multiple MID Servers for load balancing.
• Run a Discovery schedule manually.
• Run Discovery on a single IP address.

To view the run-results of your schedules for both IP-based and Cloud Discovery, use
the summaries on the Discovery Home page.
Procedure
• Navigate to All > Discovery > Discovery schedules to create a new record.

Fig. 15
• Select the type of schedule to open:
o New: Creates a new horizontal schedule for discovering components in
your network.
o Quick Discovery: Runs a horizontal Discovery on a single IP address
without requiring a schedule.
o Create a Cloud Discovery schedule: Creates a schedule, using the
Discovery Manager wizard, for discovering resources in a cloud service
account.

Fig. 16
• Click on New and complete the Discovery schedule form, using the fields in the
table.

Fig. 17

• Right-click in the header of the record and select Save from the context menu.

Fig. 18
• To create a range of IP addresses to discover, click Quick Ranges or Discovery
IP Ranges under Related Links.

• After setting all above process.

• Click on Discover Now.

Check and Verify Discovery Status:

The status record for that discovery appears. All the status which will be running on
discovery all will be appear here:
• Navigate to Discovery > Status.
