COMPARISON AND CONTRAST

In the Comparison and Contrast rhetorical function study, you are going to learn how to
establish similarities and differences between the characteristics or functions of items, remember
the importance of markers in this type of study.

Comparison:
It expresses the similarities that exist between two or more items. It is the act of comparing, an
examination of two or more objects with the view of discovering the resemblances.
Compare – to examine (two or more objects, ideas, people, and others) in order to note Similarities.
Comparison Markers
1. A is like B
2. A is similar to B
3. With respect to color A and B are equal
4. A is comparable to B
5. A resembles B
6. A is the same as B
7. A is equal to B
8. There is a similarity between A and B
9. A and B are alike in size

EXAMPLES:
1. Normally bricks and pavers are comparable in the level of size
Marker: are comparable

2. Manufacturing and service are often similar in terms of what is done

Contrast:
It expresses the differences that exist between two or more items.
Since the word contrast can be used to mean a nothing of similarities alone, the phrase
Comparison and Contrast is sometimes used to designate a nothing of similarities and differences.
Both actions involve the description or the characteristics, properties, or functions of some items.
They can take place within the same sentence or between sentences.
