Animals are beings that, unable to protest abuse, become fragile and
defenseless before this cruel and indifferent society. They cannot express
themselves by asking for respect for their rights, which include the right at least
not to be tortured, to live in freedom, to have their habitat preserved, to meet
their basic needs, and most importantly, to do not cause them pain. They have
feelings just like us. If you have any animals at home, take care of them and
keep them in acceptable conditions and also respect them.
Every year, millions of animals are victims of cruelty, as they are mutilated,
poisoned, electrocuted and burned in experiments. Even in pharmaceutical
laboratories, animal experiments cause more harm than good.
In the first quarter of 2023, complaints of animal abuse grew by 29% compared
to the same previous period, the Animal Welfare Institute (NBA) reported in a
statement. The organization received an average of 441 monthly reports of
abuse during the first three months of the year, with 387 in January, 430 in
February and 504 in March.
In Peru, a person who abandons or attacks an animal can be sentenced to
three to five years in prison according to Law 30407. This law, in force since
2016, recognizes animals as living beings with the right to receive adequate
care and proper tenure.
The Animal Protection and Welfare Law aims to guarantee the well-being,
protection and care of companion animals and wild animals. It legally
recognizes their status as living beings, capable of experiencing joy, suffering,
pain and reflecting emotions.
On the other hand, human action has led to an alarming increase in the rate of
extinctions. Being poaching, the degradation of habitat and ecosystems due to
illegal logging and mining; intensive agriculture and livestock farming that
reduce forest cover to have more areas for cultivation and grazing; the forest
fires; the contamination of seas, rivers, lakes and lagoons due to oil spills and
mining tailings; as well as climate change some of the threats that these
creatures face.
In Peru we present a total of 389 species divided into: 122 species of birds, 120
amphibians, 92 mammals, 32 reptiles and 23 invertebrates in danger of
extinction and within them 64 are in critical danger, which represents the
highest level of threat, this being a step before extinction.
Worldwide, there are more than 11,100 species in danger of extinction, and that
is taking into account only vertebrates. Within these, however, it is amphibians
and sharks that seem most likely to disappear, since in both cases around 40%
of the species in these groups are currently threatened.
To improve animal abuse, the Municipality of Chiclayo (Lambayeque region)
built an animal shelter in 2017 by the mayor, David Cornejo Chinguel, who
together with the Prosecutor, Ivon Zarate and a group of officials visited the
plant located in the park. Industrial, where a conditioned space and necessary
human resources were implemented to accommodate the injured, sick and
abused dogs that wander the streets of the city every day.
Even some people, to protect animals, are modifying their eating habits, they
are changing the way they dress, they aren’t attending circuses because they
aren’t fun for them, they are not wearing animal skins, they aren’t attending
zoos, they are not They are experimenting on animals, they aren’t allowing
bullfighting and they are denouncing any type of animal abuse.
Animal protection associations are using all available media to spread the
message of animal protection and welfare. Likewise, they are generating
services for the community that improve the quality of life of the animals. Also,
they are helping animals at risk through plans and programs according to the
different cases.
World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), was founded as a non-profit organization
that would work for the conservation of animal species in Latin America. The
conservation programs that they have developed, only at the national level, are
educational programs, Support for conservation centers, Alliances with the
government to allow research programs, and Environmental care projects and
plans (such as electrical blackouts). Anyone can approach the organization.
There are vacancies for formal work and even different types of volunteering
around all the ONG offices.
World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA), is the main network of
contact between conservation centers for research, exchange of species and
mainly for the development of reproduction programs, which consists of carrying
out studies between species in captivity - in all parts of the world - to determine
which pairs of little animals will naturally complete a mating ritual.
