Silent valley is a tropical rain forest area at the southern end of the
Western Ghats in the Malabar region of Kerala. It is one of the richest
biological and genetic heritages in the world. The government of Kerala
proposed a hydro-electric project which had a potential for employment.
But there was an instant campaign against the project as it posed a threat
of extinction to the large variety of biological species which have evolved
over hundreds of years. Many individuals and organizations opposed the
project. The success of the campaign in saving the silent valley indicates
the stand that development should not be at the cost of environment.

The above flow chart briefly describes the process of recording bio-
metric attendance by the faculty and students of polytechnics. First, one
should type the bio-metric ID. Next, wait till the beep sound. Place any
finger on it. Later attendance will be displayed. Finally, press the OKAY
button.

Read the following paragraph and answer the questions.

On a rainy summer morning in 1896, with his wife watching


enthusiastically, a thirty-three-year-old engineer for the Edison Illuminating
Company in Detroit, Michigan, took his quadricycle for its first ride. Henry
Ford was a farm boy who later turned into engineer. He knocked down the
bricks surrounding his shop’s narrow entrance as he realized the way was
narrow for his new horseless carriage. The carrier he created using the
principles of four cylinders, brakeless box on wheels was looking very
ridiculous. He constructed it in his spare time. At twelve, a year later, he
built a first full size car designed for the masses. It was named as Model T.
This incredibly strong, inexpensive and reliable vehicle was built by the Ford
Motor Company founded in 1903. Henry Ford founded his company with
the twenty-eight thousand dollars taken from a local coal dealer.

Within a year of manufacturing the Model T cars, there were ten


thousand of them on the roads. The company produced the cars so rapidly
that by 1920, one out of the two cars in the world was a Ford car. He had
succeeded far beyond what he might have thought he could. Hardly a few
years after Introducing Model T, the company was producing one car every
three minutes. Ford improved its production methods that Model T’s price
came down from nine hundred dollars to five hundred dollars. The success
of the car was so huge that Ford became a billionaire and his cheap car
began to transform the physical, social and economic fabric of American life.

It was available for a mere $290 by 1924, the Model T rapidly changed
rural America, bringing the newspaper, prosperity, and the world to a
farmer’s doorstep. It put an end to rural isolation. It expanded a commercial
networks, took the city dweller to the villages. Within a few decades,
highway networks were created. The automobile changed the land and how
Americans worked and played.
