This article goes over how music connects artists and listeners. Garringer uses many

familiar examples of artists like Kurt Cobain and how his lyrics were like a look into what he

was thinking. He mentions other artists as well. The author goes into detail about how these

songs are very relatable to fans especially after these songs dropped as the artists mentioned all

committed suicide not long after. Around the middle of the article, he ties this back to how the

meanings of these songs impact fans. He mentions what qualities make celebrities so influential

on fans like similarities and likability. He also mentions relatability and stresses that this can be a

huge factor for how much of a connection the fans feel to the lyrics or the artists. He mentions

how mental health and trauma are huge and can cause a connection to songs for fans as it makes

them feel heard.

I am including this source because of its relevancy to my argument. It mentions how

music and lyrics can be influential on fans due to resonation and relatability. This is a huge part

of my argument as the lyrics in the songs between Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion actually

mention a lot of sensitive topics that fans might resonate with. This would cause the songs to be

more influential so I believe that this article will be very helpful in regard to addressing that

specific point in my research paper.

This article by Tia Tyree and Melvin Williams starts off by explaining what diss tracks

are and how they are used in the music industry, more specifically in rap music. It actually

mentions a diss track made against Nicki Minaj by Remy Ma called “ShETHER.” They go into

detail about how diss songs are used to verbally abuse or discredit other artists due to them

having personal drama or conflict with each other. They mention how rap battles can actually

boost both artists careers as well as ruin one or the others. The article mentions numerous times

about how much traction these diss songs will get from listeners. This article is also an analysis

on the influence of black women artists and how they are treated in the industry. They mention

how black women are usually overshadowed by men in general or white women. Later they

mention Hip-Hop Feminism which is women artist supporting each other rather than a diss track.

They go into detail about many other topics including Black Women Rap Politics and Complex

Narratives. Complex Narratives actually analyzes some of the more popular lyric choices and

what they mean. Its main idea is that Black women use diss tracks to shoe dominancr.

I feel as though this article will be extremely beneficial as a source from my research.

The fact that it directly goes into what a diss track is will be helpful. My argument about diss

tracks can be successfully backed up using this information. Not only are diss tracks mentioned,

but so is the influence of Black Women artists on listeners and each other. This also greatly

connects to my argument as I will be using Nicki Minaj and Megan Thee Stallion as examples

and they are both Black Women Rap Artists who have made at least one “diss track.” Overall,

this is a great source to use for my research.

This article is a study on adolescent involvement with celebrities and media. It mentions

that adolescents are mainly involved because of mass media. It mentions the three motivations of

the Celebrity Attitudes Scale. These motivations are entertainment-social values, intense-

personal feelings, and borderline-pathological tendency. This article mentions how admiration

also plays a big role on how the media and celebrities will influence adolescents and to what

degree. It mentions how adolescent involvement with celebrities will actually cause them to have

similar, if not the same, materialistic values and other values. Adolescents will actually attempt

to copy a celebrity or alter their own lifestyle to match one of who they are watching. They

mention how celebrity idols actual will function like role models and can affect their fans sense

of self-identity. Adolescents will compare themselves to celebrities and change the things about

themselves that do not imitate the celebrities. It also mentions how female adolescents’

dissatisfaction with their bodies stems from seeing the images of thinness and comparing

themselves to that.

This article will be helpful to my research as well as my argument. The way it is based

around celebrities influence on fans or adolescents goes hand and hand with my argument about

how the specific celebrities Megan Thee Stallion and Nicki Minaj have a huge influence on fans

lives and how they act. This article lines up with my research questions and is overall extremely

helpful in building my argument and backing it up.
