REPORT ON STRESS RELAXATION TEST FOR
UNCOATED SEVEN WIRE STEEL STRAND
Client United Wires - ElSewedy
Project
This report has been prepared upon the request of United Wires - ElSewedy in order to carry
out stress relaxation test for uncoated seven wire steel strand,
1. Delivered Samples:
One sample of uncoated seven wire steel strand having nominal diameter of 15.2 mm and
length of 2.0 m. A tension test was carried out for other specimens manufactured under
the same conditions. The tensile test results are as follow (Reference our report No.
0084/2018 dated 30/11/2018):
* The average yield strength (load at 1% Elongation) = 243.15 KN.
* The average breaking strength= 273.05 KN.
* The average elongation under load = 6.35%
2. ASTM A416 Requirements:
* The specified minimum yield strength (load at 1% Elongation) = 234.6 kN.
+ The specified minimum breaking strength = 260.7 KN.
* The specified minimum Elongation under load = 3.5 %
* The specified maximum relaxation losses under 70 % of specified minimum
breaking strength = 2.5 %

3. Test Method
‘The stress relaxation test was carried out according to ASTM A416 and ASTM £:328
on a specimen cut from the delivered sample having length of 1750 mm. The test
specimen was set in a long-term loading frame and subjected to an increasing tensile
force up to the specified initial test load of 182.49 KN which is 70% of the specified
minimum breaking strength (0.7*260.7=182.49 kN). After the specified initial test load
was reached, the tested specimen was maintained at a constant strain as specified by
the test specifications and the test load was monitored with time using a precise load
cell having 500 kN capacity and sensitivity of 0.01 KN, and a data logger was used to
record the test load with time up to the end of the specified test period of 1000 hours.
The test was carried out in a room with a controlled temperature that ranges from 18 to
22°C, The test was started on 16/12/2018 05:00 pm and was ended on 27/01/2019 9:00
am.
4. Test Results
This report presents the test data up to 1000 hours. The recorded test load for the
specimen under constant strain condition was recorded with time and is presented in
Figure 1 using log scale for the x axis (time). The relaxation losses % is calculated
according to the test spec’ tions as the reduction (%) in the test load relative to the
initial test load and plotted against log the time in, “a 2

5. Analysis of the test results
Analysis of the test results indicates the following:
* Relaxation losses % after 200 hours = 1.523 %
¢ Relaxation losses % after 1000 hours = 1.912 %
According to the analysis of the test results, the specimen satisfies the ASTM A416
acceptance limit of 2.5% for the allowable relaxation losses after 1000 hours.
