GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Today’s youths are faced with many social and academic issues. The constant desire for
academic validation can lead to mental health issues. Hence, I chose the topic "The Effects
of School on Students’ Mental Health" in order to highlight the linkages between the
education system and the depletion of students’ mental health.

This research consists of an exposition and reflection. The exposition will explore the
negative psychological effects of the education system on students. While the reflection
consists of a poem, which depicts a teenage girl who struggles with managing her
schoolwork but finds solace in knowing that she can rely on the persons around her to assist
her when she feels overwhelmed.

As a Sociology student, I was motivated to explore this theme as the effects of education on
society are studied. Furthermore, I hope to pursue a career in Psychology and may have to
do studies on this. Therefore, this research would be beneficial as I will obtain information
needed to give me a better understanding of the topic and spread awareness to both parents
and teachers.
