THE EXPOSITORY SPEECH


SYLLABUS GUIDELINES (EXPOSITION – 16 MARKS)

 This section of the portfolio will be orally presented and examined. The
duration should be no more than 10 minutes per candidate. (You have 7
minutes)
 A candidate should collect at least two pieces of related information
on the selected topic.
SYLLABUS GUIDELINES (EXPOSITION – 16 MARKS)

 A candidate’s presentation should be well organized (introduction,


logical sequence of ideas, conclusion) and effectively delivered, and
should feature:
 a discussion of the issue and the challenges in conducting the research;
 an evaluation of the effect of source, context and medium (or channel)
on the reliability and validity of information gathered.
ARE MY SOURCES RELIABLE?

Five questions to determine if the source is credible/reliable (i.e., the


author and type of source can be trusted to provide good information)
 Who is the author? (Authority)
 What is the purpose of the content? (Accuracy)
 Where is the content from? (Publisher)
 Why does the source exist? (Purpose and Objectivity)
 How does this source compare to others? (Determining What’s What)

IS THE CONTENT VALID?

 Analyse if what the source is saying is correct and appropriate.


 Check the date of publication (or when last the site was updated).

 Candidates may bring to the examination room a single cue


card, 4” by 6”, with headings (and nothing else) related to
their presentation. Teachers must ensure that each candidate’s
card is free of additional information.
METHODS FOR DELIVERING A SPEECH

 Manuscript Speech: a speech that is written out word for word and
read to the audience.
 Reciting from Memory
 Speaking Impromptu: a speech delivered with little or no immediate
preparation.
 Extemporaneous Speech: a carefully prepared and rehearsed speech
that is presented from a brief set of notes. It has a conversational quality
that sounds spontaneous.
 As outlined in the syllabus:
 Delivery (Audibility, fluency, eye contact, body movement, and
paralinguistic features such as pauses, throat clearing, pitch and
other such) (4 marks)
 Candidate speaks with a clear, audible voice throughout and is
consistently fluent and confident, with excellent paralinguistic
control.

DEALING WITH NERVOUSNESS

 Use visualization: create a vivid mental movie in which you see


yourself successfully delivering your speech.
 Be honest in what you say.
 Do not plagiarize: do not steal anyone’s speech; do not steal ideas or
language from one or two sources; give credit to whom it’s due. Restate
the author’s ideas in your own words.
