TEXT A

SOUTH AFRICAN HEROES OF 2021

1 The year 2021 was not easy. The pandemic proved it was not going anywhere,
there was loadshedding and the petrol price skyrocketed. However, one thing
we know about South Africans, is that we really know how to find inspiration on
even the darkest days. This article highlights five extraordinary South Africans
who have done just that. 5

2 At the age of 10, Ntando Mahlangu still could not walk causing his parents to
fear that their child would spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. Now, this
teenager is one of the most inspiring Paralympic athletes on the planet, with two
gold medals to prove it.

3 The 19-year-old blade runner and jumper leapt into the hearts of South Africans 10
when he set the world record in the men’s long jump at the 2020 Paralympics in
Tokyo. He followed this up with another gold medal in the men’s 200 metres
and cemented his status as national hero.

4 His rise to the top has been nothing short of remarkable and his story has been
captured in a Netflix film titled, Rising Phoenix. Ntando, who was 18 at the time 15
the movie was filmed, was the youngest Paralympian¹ featured. His plans for
2022 include pursuing a career in investment management, while also running
circles around his opponents on the track.

5 Tatjana Schoenmaker, is a South African swimmer who made a splash at the

Tokyo Olympics when she took gold and broke the first world record at the 20
Games. The 24-year-old from Roodepoort on the West Rand completed the
200 metres breaststroke in two minutes and eighteen seconds. She also won
silver in the 100 metres breaststroke.

6 Tatjana used her reward money and money collected in her honour, to start the
Tatjana Foundation. The foundation serves to educate people on water safety 25
while also offering swimming classes to the disadvantaged.

7 Dr Emmanuel Taban’s journey to becoming one of South Africa’s leading

pulmonologists² was by no means an easy one. He was born into poverty in the
war-torn Sudan but made his way to South Africa, on foot, when he was just 17.
At times, he did not know where he would sleep or where his next meal would 30
come from. He prides himself on being persistent and thinking out of the box. ‘If
the system says no, you go to the next door,’ he says. ‘If the door is closed,
push it gently or look through the keyhole – you might see something.’

8 Professor Keertan Dheda is part of a leading team of scientists at the University

of Cape Town, who has developed a new method of diagnosing Tuberculosis 35
(TB) from the skin. This method, which is fast and accurate, is called an A-Patch.
It detects TB compounds released from the skin. Patients are required to wear
two absorbent patches on their upper arm for an hour and then samples from
these patches are analysed to diagnose TB.

9 Professor Dheda says the cutting-edge technology can change how other 40
illnesses are diagnosed. He believes that the A-patch has laid the foundation for
the development of a variety of wearable patches which can detect many
different illnesses and diseases.

10 When Ernest Majenge saw how people with disabilities battled to move around
in wheelchairs, he was inspired to help them by creating a wheelchair that climbs 45
stairs.

11 After making a prototype of the chair, Ernest sought funding for his project, but
investors thought he was bonkers, saying he was wasting his time. Undeterred,
he continued looking for assistance to bring his vision to life. Finally, he found
one in France. 50

12 His company, The Wheelchair Doctor, has already sold five wheelchairs in Paris
and he now plans to grow the business. Ernest says there is no wheelchair like
his, which is proudly South African. The company is even in the process of
coming up with more wheelchairs for different scenarios and areas such as
beaches, schools and old age homes. 55

TEXT C

MONEY MANAGEMENT MADE EASY

Money management is one of the most important keys to financial success. Not
everyone is born with a silver spoon in the mouth, and money definitely does not
grow on trees, but this does not mean you cannot live a life of luxury. There are many
ways you can ensure that you save enough money to be financially stable.

Setting a financial goal forces you to be disciplined regarding your spending habits.
You can choose a small goal like saving up for a phone and a big one like saving up
for your retirement.

One of the best management decisions you can make is to set up a monthly budget.
This helps you to avoid overspending. There are three personal budgeting systems
people use: the envelope budget, the 50/30/20 budget and the zero budget.

Cutting down on debt will help you get ahead financially. The more debt you erase,
the less interest you will pay, and this will lead to thousands of rands of savings. If
you have multiple debts, work on clearing the smaller ones first.

Cut your spending on brand-name products and choose the cheaper alternative
especially for things like cleaners, facial tissues, or snack foods. Keep track of every
purchase you make by keeping receipts and checking bank statements.

Shopping with friends often leads to unnecessary spending. Avoid the temptation
and rather go to the mall on your own. Introduce some spending limits by allowing
yourself a percentage of the money you have for leisure and the rest for saving.

TITANIC MAKES A SPLASH

1 The Oscar-winning movie was first screened in cinemas twenty-four year ago.
The film is about a fictional romance that takes place around the real tragedy
when the passenger liner Titanic struck an iceberg on her maiden voyage in
1912.

2 Leonardo Dicaprio and Kate Winslet play the star-crossed lovers in the film. 5
It was hugely popular around the globe and held the box-office record until a

expeditions to the wreck of the Titanic and some of this footage is used in the
