MATERIALS:
25-60 mt. Alessandra Filati’s Lupo di Mare cotton yarn
size 3 mm (size 11 UK or D/3 USA) crochet hook
small amount of batting

STITCHES USED:
magic ring; slip stitch (sl st); chain (ch); single crochet (sc)

GAUGE: 11 stitches and 14 rows sc in 2” (5cm) square

For a multiple looped necklace (the green version), use the number of stitches indicated (not the
number in brackets). Make 15 modules, or the number necessary for the desired length.
For a single looped necklace with more closely-placed balls (the pink version), use the number of
stitches indicated [in brackets]. Make 9 modules, or the number necessary for the desired length.

Ball and chain module:


Make a magic ring and work 6 sc inside of it. Close magic ring with 1 sl st. (6 stitches)
1st round (increase): 1 ch, *2 sc in first stitch. Repeat from * until the end of round. Close round
with 1 sl st. (12 stitches)
2nd round (increase): 1 ch, *2 sc in first stitch, 1 sc in next stitch. Repeat from * until the end of
round. Close round with 1 sl st. (18 stitches)
3rd round: 1 ch, *1 sc in each stitch. Repeat from * until the end of round. Close round with 1 sl st.
(18 stitches)
4th round (decrease): 1 ch, *1 sc in first stitch, work next two stitches together with 1 sc,. Repeat
from * until the end of round. Close round with 1 sl st. (12 stitches)

Stuff the ball with batting until firm.

5th round (decrease): 1 ch, *work two stitches together with 1 sc. Repeat from * until the end of
round. Close round with 1 sl st. (6 stitches)
6th round (decrease): 1 ch, *work two stitches together with 1 sc. Repeat from * until the end of
round. (3 stitches)

First ball (with loop closure): 50 [21] ch. Go 15 stitches back down the chain stitch and work 1 sc,
creating a loop. Work 1 sc in each stitch all the way back to the ball. Work 1 or 2 sl st into the top
of the ball, closing up the opening. Cut yarn and weave in end.

All remaining balls: 35 [6] ch. Work 2 sl st into the bottom of the previous module’s stuffed ball.
Work 1 sc in each stitch all the way back to the current module’s ball. Work 1 or 2 sl st into the top
of the ball, closing up the opening. Cut yarn and weave in end.

Make as many modules as necessary for the desired length.
