Reflection Journal Question

For the compound below, please suggest two chemical tests to identify the functional groups in the
compound and predict the wavenumber range at which the functional groups present in compound
should generate strong peaks in FTIR spectra.

phenolic OH double bond(multiple bond)

1) Test for phenolic OH can be used to identify the phenolic OH group

The compound can be reacted with aqueous Iron (III) Chloride (FeCl3) which then forms a
coloured compound (red/green/blue/purple) indicating a positive test hence, confirming the
presence of the phenolic OH group. The colour of the complex formed can vary depending
on the specific compound being tested.
2) Test for Multiple Bonds → Baeyer Test by Potassium Permanganate Solution
When the compound is reacted with a solution of potassium permanganate (KMnO4), the
purple colour of potassium permanganate is decolorized and forms a brown suspension of
MNO2. This decolorization occurs due to the oxidation of the double bonds, converting it to
a diol or a carbonyl compound.

strongest peak in the FTIR spectra

1) phenolic OH range of 3400-3000 cm-1

2) the C=O bond in the amide functional group with a range of 1840-1630 cm-1
