Concept Note:
With the rise in environmental challenges globally, and the need to have professionals to
solve the myriad environmental issues confronting Africa. Development of human capacity of
researchers in the environmental sector is urgent and critical. Barriers to Institutional
strengthening of African scientists are multi-dimensional, they are associated with limited
budget for capacity development, weak strategy for staff human capacity development, poor
commitment from some staff in developmental programs, weak infrastructural facilities and
communication network, poor or non-existent career goals among early career researchers
etc. Personal and professional development is worthy of emphasis as a means to strengthen
the capacity of early career researchers. Considering the fact that Institutional Strengthening
Program can be achieved at institutional or individual levels, it is expected that this program
will target to develop the leadership capacity of early career researchers, to be able to tackle
raising environmental challenges at local, national, regional and global level. The three-day
workshop program will introduce early career researchers on strategies of developing a good
career development plan or goals. It is obvious, that a lot of young career researcher are lost,
and would hardly find their foothold on any career projectile. The workshop will use hands-
on tools to help participants to develop career plans, enhance their leadership capacity skills,
deliberate on pathways to tackle environmental challenges peculiar to the African continent.
The Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-Leaf), regional workshop by
the Environmental Cluster Regional, will strengthen the leadership capacity of early career
researchers, it is expected that the orientation and gains from the workshop will help early
career researchers to have a focus and to stay on it, this is a great necessity for the personal,
professional development of participants, and for the continent.
Workshop Objectives:
1. Introduce strategies for developing effective career development plans for young
scientists.
2. Enhance leadership capacity skills among participants.
3. Develop grant making potential among participants to finance climate change issues
4. Deliberate on pathways to address environmental challenges in Africa.
