Schindler’s List – Viewing

Dear Parent or Guardian,

With your permission your student will be viewing Schindler’s List directed by
Steven Spielberg, as part our Holocaust unit in the Genocide Studies course.
Students will analyze the movie, complete written assignments and participate in
class discussion.

The film turns history into a moral lesson by revealing how fragile civilization truly
is. As Spielberg told members of Congress, "History has to cease being facts and
figures, stories and sagas from long ago and far away about them or those. In order
to learn from history, rather than just about it, students need to rediscover that
those people were just like us."

The movie is rated R for violence and nudity. Students will see graphic depictions of
the horrors suffered by the Holocaust victims, who were sometimes forced to strip
completely naked for medical inspections. There is also brief use of profanity.

The movie offers an invaluable learning tool in teaching about the Holocaust;
however, we also support the decision of some parents/guardians who do not wish
for their students to view the movie. The students will be expected to maintain a
high level of maturity and respect for the subject matter depicted in this film, and
any student not displaying these behaviors will be removed and given an alternative
assignment.

If you would prefer your child NOT to view Schindler’s List, or have any
questions or concerns that you would like to discuss, please notify me through
email:
