The culture in our lives. Do we value what we have?

By Yasumi Vera

It is incredible to have the joy of saying that I have grown up in a country full of
cultures and history to tell: Peru, the country of the Incas. No brainer, if I had been
allowed to choose which country I wanted to be in, I would choose it over and over
again. However, I didn't always think like that.

Firstly, I was born in a very peculiar district called Callao. But, all my life I have been
in Comas. In fact, in this place, I won many awards like being the winner of the “Crea
y Emprende” contest at the regional level. Besides, I have lived with a beautiful
family, which has taught me to be unique and to love everything I am, and with that
to value my culture.
Apart from this, I have grandparents who were born in the jungle and highlands of
Peru, so I have several traditions and customs from them. For instance, I have been
practicing "La Fiesta de San Juan". It's a good tradition from my grandfather. Also,
we always eat “Juane” in this celebration.
However, despite having a culture to be proud of, there was a time when I didn't like
to have them. I remember when it was time to talk about our culture in elementary
school, I would invent a completely different one.

For that reason with time I have realized that culture is what makes a person. It is a
part of you and if you don't value it, you don't value yourself. Therefore, that made
me change and feel proud of who I am and where I come from. Long story short,
sometimes, the best thing to do is to reflect and ask yourself: Am I really valuing who
I am and where I come from?
