Introduce the Learning Activity: A. The teacher will describe a writing workshop to the students. A writing workshop is when the students work in groups to proof read and edit their own writing. This is important for students because it will help them obtain higher grades on their writing assignments. By having your peers proof read your work, and suggest parts of the work that need improvement or clarification, it focuses the students attention on progress to be made before the paper is handed in. This assures that students will receive a higher grade when the paper is actually handed in for grading by the teacher. a. This is also an online assignment and students should be interested that they can access their homework anywhere they have an internet connection and computer. This should help to motivate the students. They should also find motivation in the fact that this is a group project. Students usually like working together and find it harder to disappoint a peer than the teacher. Also, the students will be receiving pass/fail grades for their posts.

Provide Information: A. In the beginning of the lesson the teacher will describe a writing workshop. Writing workshop- A writing workshop is when students are able to give and receive feedback on their writing. A writing workshop can help students edit their papers before they hand them in for grading. They can also help students to make sure their paper is actually saying what they want it to say. When someone else reads your writing, they have a different interpretation of what you wrote. In a writing workshop, the students will be reading and commenting on each others papers so the students will know what their paper makes other students think. If they realize that the other student does not understand the main point of the paper, then the student knows the paper needs to change. This is the idea of a successful writing workshop. Provide Practice: A. To practice posting an commenting in a writing workshop, the students will be asked to complete an online vocabulary workshop. The teacher has posted a poem by Robert Frost on KIDBLOG.org with specific instructions. Each student must read the poem and, in a Microsoft word document, develop a working definition of the word rued. Once they have finished the definition, the students will create their

own blog and post the definition in the post. Next, the writing groups will be announced and the students will be asked to find the blogs posted by the other members in their group. Once they have read their peers definitions, they will be asked to post a response determining if they agree or disagree and why.

Provide Knowledge of Results: A. Along with the students commenting on each others posts, the teacher will also post on each students blog. The teacher will also notify the students that they will only be receiving a pass/fail grade for this assignment. If they post they pass.

Review the Activity: A. Since the class will be using this site for future assignments, the teacher will have a mini-review of how we accessed the blog and how to post in the blog. They will be asked to write down the steps in their notebooks. The class will also review this activity when we begin the process with student essays. Method of Assessment: A. Since this lesson is an introduction to the writing workshop process, the students will be receiving pass/fail grades for their posts. If they post, they pass. Later in the lesson, the students will receive a rubric that describes what they need to include to produce an effective persuasive essay.
