CCSS-ELA-LITERACY.RL.1: Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly
and when drawing inferences from the text.
CCSS-ELA-LITERACY.RL.3: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or drama, drawing on
specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).
PRE-ASSESSMENT: What are students’ strengths and needs related to this Instructional Activity?
Strengths: students are great at participating and staying engaged for extended periods.
Needs: Clarification on plot of story.
ORGANIZATION: What are the goals? What standards are you working on in this activity?
Goal: To infer next events in the story.
ENGAGEMENT: How will I/we get started (Opening Move)? What are the details of the plan?
• OPENING MOVE ⟶ Show cover of book and read out loud title. Ask students first what they see. Pick
3-4 students to answer. Then ask students what they wonder. Pick 3-4 students to answer. If students
don’t point out details that will be pertinent to the reading, I will also share what I see and wonder to
help students keep possible ideas in their heads while we read.
ASSESSMENT: How will I/we make sense of what students are learning? What can I/we watch for? How
could you use multiple measures of representing, expressing, and engaging students to demonstrate their
knowledge?
Pair share to help students share inferences and to hear different perspectives/inferences from one
another.
